Job summary

City of Fredericksburg, Virginia is seeking Equipment Operators I–III to support Public Works. You will operate light to heavy equipment, perform inspections, fuel, and perform routine maintenance while following safety practices and documenting work.

Advancement through Operator I to III depends on demonstrated skills, training, and performance. The role includes snow and storm response, traffic control, and collaboration with crews.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• One to two years experience in construction, maintenance, grounds, utilities, refuse, public works operations, or equipment operation.
• Must meet all minimum qualifications, licenses, certifications, and training requirements for the preceding position.
• Must possess a VDOT-approved Basic Work Zone Traffic Control certification.
• Must complete OSHA-required training within 30 days.

Responsibilities

• Operate light to medium machinery; conduct inspections, fueling and cleaning.
• Assist with maintenance operations and emergency responses; use tools safely.
• Provide professional public interaction; be available during emergencies and inclement weather.
