Job summary

The City of Waukee seeks an Assistant Director of Public Works - Engineering to ensure that public improvements are built in compliance with state laws and accepted engineering standards while minimizing risk to the public and responsibly managing resources.

The role provides leadership to the Engineering Division, directs policy and programs, oversees CIP and budgets, and reviews complex development plans for conformance with requirements, ensuring safety and regulatory compliance.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering or construction engineering and five years of municipal public works experience.
• Two years of supervisory experience.
• IDOT technician certification or ability to obtain within one year of hire.
• APWA Public Works supervision or equivalent certification or ability to obtain within two years.
• Valid Iowa driver’s license and knowledge of codes/regulations.

Responsibilities

• Leads the Engineering Division staff through selection, orientation, training, performance management and discipline.
• Directs Engineering Division policies, procedures, regulations, programs, systems and objectives.
• Oversees CIP, private development projects, environmental, transportation and construction in Public Works.
• Reviews plans submitted by consultants to ensure conformance with requirements.
• Ensures public infrastructure and rights‑of‑ways are managed per state laws and standards.
• Maintains safety compliance and performs other duties as assigned.
