Job summary

Town of Vienna is seeking an experienced Public Works Director to lead a dynamic department serving ~17,000 residents. You will oversee 81 staff and a $45M annual budget across water, sewer, stormwater, transportation, facilities, fleet, and waste operations.

The role shapes long-term infrastructure investments, develops capital programs, manages budgets and grants, and collaborates with the Town Manager, Town Council and regulatory agencies. Exempt, full-time employment in Vienna, VA.

Qualifications

• Master’s degree in a relevant field.
• Six years of full-time management-level experience as a Civil Engineer or closely related role.
• Valid State driver’s license and ability to obtain Virginia licensure within a year.

Responsibilities

• Hires, trains, motivates, coaches and evaluates staff; approves salary actions and promotions.
• Leads deputies and managers across operating, capital, grants and enterprise budgets.
• Ensures safety standards and proper equipment use; enforces safety conditions.
• Prepares and presents budgets, proposals and reports to Town Council and Town Manager.
• Oversees facilities, transportation, and utility programs; coordinates with commissions and partner agencies.
• Develops capital programs and tracks projects from scope to completion; manages grant applications.
• Identifies funding sources; writes proposals and secures transportation and utility grants.
