Job summary

The City of Fredericksburg is seeking an Assistant Director of Public Utilities to guide water distribution and sanitary sewer conveyance and treatment operations. This leadership role focuses on strategic planning, budget oversight, and regulatory compliance to support essential city services.

Ideal candidates will have a engineering or environmental science background with 6–9 years in public utilities operations, plus a Virginia driver’s license.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in engineering, environmental science or other relevant field.
• Six to nine years of progressive responsible experience in public utilities operations and administration.
• Must possess a valid Virginia state driver’s license (or ability to obtain licensure within 6 months of appointment).

Responsibilities

• Help manage the water distribution and sanitary sewer conveyance and treatment systems.
• Lead strategic and operational planning for department goals and objectives.
• Assist in development and monitoring of operational budgets and capital improvements.
• Oversee daily utilities operations and ensure compliance with applicable laws and standards.
• Prepare and present reports to regulatory agencies and City Council.
