Job summary

City of Cottage Grove is seeking a semi-skilled maintenance worker to support water treatment, water distribution, and sanitary sewer systems. The role includes responding to water quality inquiries, operating SCADA-related tasks, and coordinating with contractors and City departments.

Responsibilities

Job description

This is a semi-skilled maintenance position of non-exempt classification that performs a variety of maintenance and repair duties for the City’s water distribution, water treatment, and sanitary sewer systems, along with street lighting and traffic signals.

Hiring range is $29.05 to $38.48 per hour.
Full range is $29.05 to $40.04 per hour.

1. Operate, maintain, and repair the City’s water treatment facilities.
2. Maintain and repair of all facets of the water distribution system.
3. Monitor and record data related to the granular activated carbon filtration stations at the designated wells.
4. General maintenance of all Utilities division land and buildings.
5. Inspects water hookups and curb stops, performs locates as requested and turns water on and off as directed.
6. Respond to customer service calls relating to water quality, usage and related water problems.
7. Respond to Gopher One utility locates.
8. Coordinate utility projects with contractors, homeowners, engineers and other City departments.
9. Monitor the City well system with the documentation and recording of all daily readings.
10. Provide maintenance as necessary to the well system.
11. Maintain and make necessary repairs to the sanitary sewer system, including but not limited to vacuuming and jetting sewer lines, sewer line repairs, tree root removal, manhole rehabilitation and lift station maintenance.
12. Assist in flushing hydrants and making necessary repairs when needed.
13. Respond to customer service calls relating to sewer back-ups, odor, etc.
14. Assist department personnel with snow removal utilizing commercial vehicles, pickup trucks and utility machines.
15. Assist department personnel in street light and traffic signal outages and minor repair.
16. Responds to calls during non-work hours as required.
17. Use computers and mobile devices to research utility information and input inspection data in to the City’s GIS database.
18. Perform all other necessary duties as apparent or assigned.

1. High school diploma or equivalent.
2. Valid driver’s license.
3. Possession of a commercial drivers license (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within six months of employment.
4. Possession of a Class “D” water operator’s certificate and/or Class “S-D” sanitary sewer collection certificate or ability to obtain one within 6 months.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

1. Two years of operations and maintenance experience in a water treatment plant, with an emphasis on iron/manganese and PFAS removal.
2. Formal education, training or practical experience in water and/or sewer maintenance, light and heavy equipment operation, snowplowing, generator operation, building maintenance, carpentry and plumbing.
3. Possession of a Class “C” or “B” water operator’s certificate.

2. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance activities as related to water distribution and sanitary sewer systems.
3. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, tools, materials and equipment used in construction and maintenance activities as related to municipal water and treatment.
4. Knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety practices of the trade.
5. Ability to work from work orders, diagrams, sketches, blue prints or other forms of direction as indicated by area of assignment.
6. Skilled in the operation of light, heavy and specialty equipment in the areas of assignment.
7. Ability to perform or demonstrate ability to perform strenuous labor and heavy manual tasks for extended periods of time when required, even in climatic extremes.
8. Knowledge of basic tools, plumbing, carpentry and electrical wiring.
9. Must demonstrate continued participation in relevant continuing education programs, including State Board of Health programs.
10. Ability to follow all federal, state and local laws, rules and requirements related to water and wastewater systems operation.
11. Ability to work with SCADA system and effectively operate a computer with standard office software.
12. Ability to respond to calls during non-working hours as required.
13. Ability to develop and maintain accurate records.
14. Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with elected officials, City employees and the public.
