Job summary

The Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) seeks a Public Service Supervisor to lead and support a team delivering essential facility services for the Capitol Complex and Iowa Laboratories Facility.

Lead day-to-day activities, coordinate with the Facility Administrator, and collaborate across teams to maintain safe, welcoming state facilities. This role emphasizes accountability, customer service, and continuous improvement.

Qualifications

  • Graduation from high school (or GED) with four years of full-time work experience in general office administrative support; specialized technical program support; or program administration, development, management, or operations.
  • Graduation from high school (or GED); and one year of full-time work experience in general office administrative support; technical program support; or program administration, development, management, or operations; and a total of three years of education and experience as described, where thirty semester hours equal one year of full-time experience; and CPMP equivalency.
  • graduation from the Iowa Certified Public Manager Program is considered equivalent to one year of experience or education.

Responsibilities

  • Plan, organize, and oversee the day-to-day work of assigned team members.
  • Provide employees with clear direction, ongoing support, and performance feedback.
  • Help establish priorities and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and strong customer service.
  • Assist the Facility Administrator with oversight of facility programs and services.
  • Coordinate responsibilities across HVAC, energy management, custodial, grounds, mail, electrical, plumbing, painting, carpentry, locksmith, building automation, and safety.
  • Monitor operational needs and coordinate timely responses to facility issues.
  • Support documentation, data analysis, reports, and communications.
  • Be an active member of the Capitol Complex Maintenance Bureau supervisory team.
  • Promote communication and consistent service across units.
  • Build relationships with employees, leadership, customer agencies, unions, contractors, and vendors.
  • Serve as liaison between occupants and Capitol Complex Maintenance for updates and requests.

Job Description

The Iowa Department of Administrative Services (DAS) is seeking an experienced Public Service Supervisor to support the operation and maintenance of the Capitol Complex and Iowa Laboratories Facility.

In this role, you will lead team members responsible for essential facility services, including building and grounds maintenance, custodial operations, mail services, plant operations, and special projects. You will also serve as a member of the Capitol Complex Maintenance Bureau's supervisory team, helping coordinate services that keep state facilities safe, functional, and welcoming.

What You'll Do
Lead and Support Staff
  • Plan, organize, and oversee the day-to-day work of assigned team members.
  • Provide employees with clear direction, ongoing support, and performance feedback.
  • Help establish priorities and ensure work is completed safely, efficiently, and on schedule.
  • Promote accountability, teamwork, and a strong commitment to customer service.
Coordinate Facility Operations
  • Assist the Facility Administrator with oversight of assigned facility programs and services.
  • Areas of responsibility may include heating, ventilation, and air conditioning; energy management; custodial services; grounds and nursery operations; mail services; electrical work; plumbing; painting; carpentry; locksmith services; building automation controls; and employee safety.
  • Monitor operational needs and help coordinate timely responses to facility issues.
  • Support the completion of required paperwork, data analysis, reports, and communications.
Collaborate Across Teams
  • Serve as an active member of the Capitol Complex Maintenance Bureau supervisory team.
  • Coordinate with managers and team members to promote communication, information sharing, and consistent service across business units.
  • Build effective working relationships with employees, leadership, customer agencies, union representatives, contractors, and vendors.
  • Serve as a liaison between facility occupants and Capitol Complex Maintenance, communicating building updates and responding to requests for maintenance, repairs, and operational support.
Manage Projects and Service Requests
  • Plan, coordinate, and complete small- to medium-sized projects requested by DAS or customer agencies.
  • Evaluate project needs, establish priorities, coordinate resources, and monitor progress.
  • Communicate project updates and potential concerns to the appropriate partners.
  • Ensure customer requests are documented, addressed, and completed in a timely manner.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Applicants must meet at least one of the following minimum requirements to qualify for positions in this job classification:

  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent) and experience equal to four years of full-time work experience in general office administrative support; specialized technical program support; or program administration, development, management, or operations.
  • All of the following (a, b, and c):
  • Graduation from high school (or GED equivalent); and
  • One year of full-time work experience in general office administrative support; technical program support; or program administration, development, management, or operations; and
  • A total of three years of education and full-time experience (as described in part b), where thirty semester hours of accredited college or university course work in any field equals one year of full-time experience. Graduation from the Iowa Certified Public Manager Program is also equivalent to one year of full-time experience or education.
