Job summary

City and County of San Francisco is seeking a Principal/Senior Data Engineer for DataSF to lead department-wide data engineering initiatives. You will own the data platform engagements, translate departmental needs into scalable data solutions, and shape governance and quality practices across city data assets.

The role emphasizes hands-on data engineering, dbt modeling, and enabling departments via self-service data access.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent in CS/IS/CE with 60+ credits.
• Five years of experience analyzing, installing, configuring, and maintaining a system or platform.
• One year extra experience may substitute for the degree; 1010 IS Trainee Program may substitute.

Responsibilities

• Own the full department engagement lifecycle from initial conversation through onboarding, delivery and support.
• Define and publish the DataSF service catalog with standard queue work and project scopes.
• Partner with departments to model data domains and translate needs into platform requirements.
• Shape analytics engineering practice including dbt models, pipelines, data quality, and standards.
• Build self-service pathways for departments to discover data and request access.
• Own data quality standards and trust signals like freshness and lineage.
• Integrate governance and data-readiness into onboarding processes.
• Set clear scope expectations with departments and perform related duties as assigned.
