  • CPR with AED certification within six (6) months of hire; valid Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law‑enforcement certification; valid Florida Driver’s License within 30 days of start date.

Responsibilities

  • Coordinate officer schedules, review paperwork, assist investigations, and participate in hiring new officers.
  • Conduct daily roll calls, provide training, present to community groups, represent department at meetings, and provide courtroom testimony as required.

Job description

Job Profile Summary

A Public Safety Sergeant is responsible for ensuring a safe learning and working environment, providing leadership and support to Public Safety Officers, and fostering a collaborative relationship with the campus community.

Eligible veterans and their spouses may claim Veterans’ Preference pursuant to Florida Statute 295. Veterans must provide required documentation when submitting their application.

Work Shift: Varies – Ability to work irregular hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays.

Essential Functions
  • Supervision (50%) – Coach, mentor, and hold staff accountable; conduct performance appraisals; support departmental mission.
  • Administrative (15%) – Coordinate officer schedules, review paperwork, assist investigations, and participate in hiring new officers.
  • Communication (15%) – Conduct daily roll calls, provide training, present to community groups, represent department at meetings, and provide courtroom testimony as required.
  • Patrol (20%) – Provide support to the community through parking enforcement, building checks, emergency response, and special event details.
Qualifications
  • Minimum Education: High School diploma or equivalent. Associate degree or sixty (60) college credit hours preferred.
  • Minimum Experience: Four (4) years in public safety or related field; prior supervisory experience preferred.
  • Minimum Certification/Licenses: CPR with AED certification within six (6) months of hire; valid Florida Class D Security Officer License or active law‑enforcement certification; valid Florida Driver’s License within 30 days of start date.
Knowledge, Skills & Abilities
  • Basic knowledge of campus public safety, law enforcement, fire/life safety techniques, criminal and civil law, FERPA, and the Clery Act.
  • Knowledge of current technologies, including computers, mobile applications, camera systems, and access control systems.
  • Communication skills – written report writing, verbal radio communications, active listening, critical thinking, leadership, management, cognitive empathy, and teaching/coaching.
  • Commitment to departmental values: collaboration, service, honesty, accountability, respect, professionalism.
  • Decision‑making under adverse conditions with sound judgment.
  • Ability to work with students, faculty, staff, and the public.
