Job summary

Maricopa County Enterprise Technology & Innovation, Wireless Systems Division, seeks a Public Safety/RF Technician to install, maintain, and repair mobile radios and data terminals in county vehicles. The role ensures reliable communications for public safety and county operations.

The position requires 3+ years in electronics, a relevant Associate’s degree, and MECP/FCC licensing or equivalent. A valid AZ driver’s license is required by hire.

Qualifications

  • Three years of experience in electronics including diagnosis, repair or hands‑on installation of radios or electronic systems in vehicles.
  • Valid Arizona driver’s license by time of hire or ability to obtain one.
  • Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP) or FCC General Radio Telephone Operator’s license or equivalent.
  • Basic metal fabrication, welding (MIG, TIG).

Responsibilities

  • Install and change‑outs of mobile two‑way radios and data terminals in various vehicles; mount antennas and run wiring; test radios/terminals for continuity.
  • Document work, update inventory in department database.
  • Respond to on‑site repair requests requiring immediate attention.
  • Perform routine maintenance and troubleshoot/repair equipment on public safety vehicles.

Requirements
  • Three years of experience in electronics which includes diagnosis, repair or hands‑on experience installing mobile radios or other electronic systems in vehicles
  • Associate’s degree in Computer Science, or a closely related field
  • A combination of post‑secondary education and/or job‑related experience may substitute for the minimum qualifications on a year‑for‑year basis.
  • Successful candidates must currently possess, or have the ability to obtain, a valid Arizona Driver's license by the time of hire
  • Mobile Electronics Certified Professional (MECP) or FCC General Radio Telephone Operator’s license or equivalent
  • Basic metal fabrication, welding (MIG, TIG)
Job Contributions
  • Perform new installation and change‑outs of mobile two-way radios and mobile data terminals within various types of vehicles, including but not limited to mounting required antennas outside the vehicle, running required wiring within the vehicle, mounting radios within the vehicle and testing all radios and data terminals for continuity prior to finishing the task.
  • Document work completed, update parts and asset inventory used in installation efforts within department-maintained electronic database.
  • Respond appropriately to on‑site customers with repair requests requiring immediate attention.
  • Perform routine maintenance; modify, troubleshoot, align and repair equipment installed on public safety vehicles including lights, sirens and two‑way radios.
  • Request approval of changes to standard installation process and record documentation.
Working Conditions
  • Exerting 50-100 lbs. occasionally, 10-25 lbs. frequently, or up to 10-20 lbs. constantly.
  • Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards and noise and vibration.
  • Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor, ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel.
