Job summary

The City of Ypsilanti Police Department seeks a sworn officer to protect life and property by enforcing laws and ordinances. Officers use judgment and initiative to operate with minimal supervision across a variety of cases.

Duties include patrolling, responding to incidents, conducting investigations, gathering evidence, testifying in court, preparing reports, and transporting prisoners. Certification and firearms proficiency are required.

Qualifications

• Must complete the MCOLES Police Certification Program.
• Certified or eligible for certification as a police officer.
• Must possess and maintain a valid Michigan Driver's License and be a U.S. Citizen.
• Strong interpersonal skills to interact with the public courteously, professionally, and tactfully.
• Ability to analyze situations quickly and accurately and communicate observations clearly.

Responsibilities

• Patrols a designated area or the total city in a patrol car, preserves law and order and enforces vehicle and traffic laws.
• Responds to calls involving traffic accidents, robberies, felonies, distur bances, and civil/domestic situations; takes appropriate action and testifies in court.
• Conducts preliminary investigations at crime/accident scenes; gathers evidence and questions suspects and witnesses.
• Prepares case reports; transports and processes prisoners to court and jail.
• Establishes traffic control at incidents and performs duties at events; conducts daily vehicle inspections.
• Performs other related duties as assigned by supervisor.
