POSITION SUMMARY

Under minimal supervision, performs duties as a Public Safety Officer I for the Public Safety department. Responsibilities include vehicle and foot patrols, patient restraints, incident report writing, public relations, emergency preparedness, door unlocks/locks, guest assistance, access control, and de-escalation of hostile visitors, employees, or patients. The officer should have a general understanding of the CCTV system and communicate extensively via radio with officers and dispatch to respond effectively to calls for service.

This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH). The employee is expected to demonstrate behavior aligned with the hospital's core values and support its strategic plan and quality improvement activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct vehicle and foot patrols to ensure a safe and secure environment for employees, physicians, patients, and guests.
  2. Respond promptly to calls for service.
  3. Maintain proficiency in radio communications.
  4. Investigate all facility interactions, including criminal investigations.
  5. Complete reports, logs, and forms timely and accurately to document security activities.
  6. Provide professional services to staff, patients, physicians, and guests, ensuring effective communication with security personnel and emergency agencies.
  7. Maintain a professional demeanor consistent with the authority of the role.
  8. Report safety violations to appropriate leadership.
  9. Assist hospital personnel with patient restraints as requested by medical staff.
  10. Respond to fire alarms within the hospital.
  11. Control access at assigned posts.
  12. Monitor surveillance cameras effectively, with a general knowledge of the CCTV system.
  13. Maintain relationships with local, state, and federal law enforcement agencies.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by a supervisor or higher authority.

Job Requirements

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in public safety/security or military is a plus. Training in cultural sensitivity is a plus.

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • Valid CA guard card required.
  • Current CPI certification (instructor or participant) or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support certification required; CPR acceptable for the first 60 days of employment.
  • Minimum of 6 months to 1 year experience in Security/Public Safety; healthcare experience is preferred.
  • Military experience, especially in military police, is a plus.
  • Excellent guest relations skills required.
  • Computer literacy required.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, interviews, and report writing.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports.
  • Strong attention to detail and commitment to accuracy.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong commitment to service.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Knowledge of John E Reid investigation and interrogation techniques is a plus.
  • Understanding of CCTV footage collection and follow-up.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain composure.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office.
  • Typing speed of 50+ words per minute.
  • Ability to establish cooperative working relationships.
