Public Safety Officer I & II, III - FT Nights - Empath Unit

Under minimal supervision, performs duties as a Public Safety Officer I for the Public Safety department. Responsibilities include vehicle and foot patrols, patient restraints, incident report writing, public relations, emergency preparedness, door unlocks/locks, guest assistance, access control, de-escalation of hostile visitors, employees, or patients, and a general understanding of the CCTV system. Extensive radio communication with officers and dispatch is essential for effective response to calls for service.

This position requires full understanding and active participation in fulfilling the mission of Martin Luther King, Jr. Community Hospital (MLKCH). Employees are expected to demonstrate behaviors aligned with the hospital's core values, support the strategic plan, and contribute to quality and performance improvement activities.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  1. Conduct vehicle and foot patrols to ensure a safe environment for employees, physicians, patients, and guests.
  2. Respond promptly to calls for service.
  3. Maintain comprehensive radio communication proficiency.
  4. Investigate incidents, including criminal investigations and facility interactions.
  5. Complete reports, logs, and forms timely and accurately.
  6. Provide professional services to staff, patients, physicians, and guests, ensuring effective communication and coordination with emergency agencies.
  7. Maintain a professional demeanor consistent with job authority.
  8. Report safety violations to leadership.
  9. Assist hospital personnel with patient restraints as requested.
  10. Respond to fire alarms within the hospital.
  11. Manage access control at assigned posts.
  12. Monitor surveillance cameras effectively, with general CCTV system knowledge.
  13. Maintain relationships with law enforcement agencies.
  14. Perform other duties as assigned by supervisors.

POSITION REQUIREMENTS

A. Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Experience in public safety/security or military is a plus; training in cultural diversity or sensitivity is also a plus.

B. Qualifications/Experience

  • Valid CA guard card required.
  • Current CPI certification (instructor or participant) or must obtain within 90 days of hire.
  • Current AHA Basic Life Support certification required; CPR acceptable for the first 60 days.
  • 6 months to 1 year minimum experience in Security/Public Safety preferred; healthcare experience is a plus.
  • Military experience, especially in military police, is a plus.
  • Excellent guest relations skills required.
  • Ability to conduct investigations, interviews, and report writing.
  • Ability to produce detailed reports and maintain accuracy.

C. Special Skills/Knowledge

  • Strong service orientation and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of investigation techniques and CCTV footage handling.
  • Ability to work under pressure and maintain composure.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and typing skills (50+ words per minute).
  • Ability to establish cooperative relationships.
