Job Summary

As guardians of the campus, Public Safety Officers provide the highest quality of public safety to faculty, staff, students, and visitors, supporting PLNU’s mission by fostering a safe learning, working, and living environment. Pay: $23.00 per hour. Schedule: 19 hours per week. Status: Part time.

Responsibilities
  • Secures premises and personnel by patrolling property on foot and/or assigned motor vehicle; monitors surveillance equipment; inspects buildings, parking lots, equipment, and access points; performs lock/unlock procedures; permits entry.
  • Provides escort services for visitors, students, staff, and faculty; offers public assistance such as lockout services, jump‑starts, and routine information.
  • Watches for and reports irregularities (security breaches, facility and safety hazards, emergency situations); contacts emergency responders as required.
  • Prevents losses and damage by reporting irregularities and informing violators of policy and procedures.
  • Provides traffic control and enforces PLNU Vehicle Code.
  • Prepares written reports of daily activities, observations, and incidents.
  • Ensures operation of equipment by completing preventive maintenance, following manufacturer’s instructions, troubleshooting malfunctions, and evaluating new equipment and techniques.
  • Acts as a first responder to alarms, collisions, injuries, and other emergencies.
  • Uses radio or other communication devices clearly and concisely.
  • Answers phone calls to the Public Safety dispatch line, dispatches officers accordingly, and keeps detailed accurate log entries in CAD.
  • Greets and assists walk‑in customers at the Department of Public Safety.
  • Monitors the Public Safety dispatch email account and university surveillance system.
  • Operates the university mass notification system, access control system, and alarm monitoring software.
  • Issues employee and student ID cards – monitors and tracks ID card charges, supply inventory, and provides technical support.
  • Receives and logs lost & found items and collaborates with the main lost and found coordinator.
  • Assists with office duties (inventory, ordering supplies, mail distribution, etc.) and covers Welcome Center duties as needed.
  • Performs miscellaneous job‑related duties as assigned.
  • Operates the Department of Public Safety 24/7, 365 days a year, at the three separate campuses and other assignments.
Qualifications
  • Current California Security Guard registration or ability to obtain a Security Guard license within 30 days of hire.
  • Current certification in First Aid, CPR, and AED use or ability to complete training and obtain certification within 30 days of hire.
  • Valid California driver’s license with a safe driving record.
  • High school diploma or GED certificate (Bachelor’s degree preferred).
  • Experience as a law‑enforcement or security officer and/or experience using two‑way radio communication.
  • Basic knowledge of access control software/hardware, surveillance camera software/hardware, CAD software systems, mass notification software systems, and ID card creation software/hardware.
  • Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing (bilingual preferred).
  • Strong interpersonal skills, flexibility, and customer service orientation.
  • Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations.
  • Ability to anticipate, identify, and solve problems.
  • Strong multitasking skills, proactive approach to job responsibilities, and high level of attention to detail.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Google Suite.
  • Ability to work all shifts/locations and be available for on‑call status.
  • Must own a cell phone and be willing to be assigned “on call.”
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • Evidence of Christian commitment and active church involvement.
Physical Requirements
  • Full range of hearing.
  • Extensive walking and sedentary duties (e.g., dispatching, Welcome Center).
  • Eyesight correctable to 20/30 with normal color vision.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
