Job summary

La Salle University is seeking a Public Safety Officer to protect students, staff, and visitors on campus. You will patrol, respond to calls, enforce policies, provide shuttle service and medical escorts, and document incidents using the campus records system.

This full-time, year-round position requires a high school diploma or GED, 3+ years of customer-facing experience, and the ability to obtain CPR/AED/First Responder certification within 12 months.

Position Summary

The Public Safety Officer I is responsible for the safety of University students, staff and faculty members, visitors, and the campus and property of the University. Officers engage in proactive patrol, respond to calls for service, provide security at designated posts, provide shuttle service and medical escort transportation, enforce University policies including parking policies, and document incidents occurring on campus and/or involving members of the La Salle Community. The Office of Public Safety is a 24 hour/day, 365 day/year operation. Public Safety Officers are considered essential personnel and are assigned to an eight hour shift.

  • Performs proactive foot, vehicle and/or bicycle patrol of designated area(s) of campus to:
  • Detect, deter and/or prevent crimes and policy violations, and reports and investigates suspicious activity and/or people.
  • Responds to emergency calls including:
    • Reports of crime
    • Medical calls
    • Fires and fire alarms
    • Other incidents as directed
  • Responds to calls for service including:
    • Personal safety escorts
    • Lock outs
    • Jump starts
    • Transports
    • Other services as directed
  • Assists the public and provides information.
  • Enforces and reports violations of University policies, and state and federal law including enforcement of University parking policies.
  • Observes, reports and mitigates hazardous or dangerous conditions found.
  • Documents activities and incidents in detail, in a timely manner, and following designated incident reporting protocol. This includes utilizing an electronic records management system.
  • Provides shuttle transportation on a specified route and schedule.
  • Provides medical and other escorts on and near campus and to local medical facilities.
  • Patrols campus parking areas and enforces parking policies.
  • Performs checks of fire and life safety equipment, campus lighting and grounds.
  • Inspects and maintains department equipment, including, but not limited to:
    • Radios
    • Vehicles
    • Computers
    • Uniforms
    • Keys
    • Facilities
  • Attends periodic training and meetings when required by a supervisor or member of the department leadership team.
  • Fosters a work environment that encourages knowledge, respect and development of skills to engage with diverse members of the LaSalle community.
Secondary Responsibilities
  • Provides security at assigned posts both inside and outside of University facilities.
  • Provides testimony in student conduct or other hearings when required.
  • Contributes to the overall success of Public Safety and the Division of Student Affairs by performing other duties as directed or assigned.

Required Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED .
  • A minimum of three (3) years of work experience, at least one (1) of which must be in a customer service or public-facing industry. Certain work experience gained in collegiate student worker and/or internship settings, if applicable, may count toward this requirement.
  • Ability to become certified in CPR / AED /First Responder within 12 months of the start date.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal skills including reliability, communication, the ability to actively listen, work on a team, receive feedback, and have professional and courteous interactions with a variety of constituents.
  • Must be proficient in writing and speaking in the English language and have a demonstrated ability to successfully communicate clearly and effectively by phone, in writing, on a radio and face to face.
  • Demonstrated computer skills including ability to use Microsoft Word and Outlook, and the capacity to learn other computer applications.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to operate a motor vehicle and be insured by the University.
  • Must successfully pass a background screening including criminal history, driving history, reference checks, and a pre-employment physical and drug-screen.

Preferred Qualifications
  • Associate’s degree or higher.
  • Current PA Act 235 or 120 certification.
  • Previous experience working in security on a college campus.
  • Knowledge of the Clery Act.
Physical Requirements and/or Unusual Work Hours
  • Must be able to perform the following physical job functions with or without a reasonable accommodation:
  • Sit, stand, walk, and drive for extended periods of time.
  • Climb stairs and inclines both inside and outside of buildings.
  • Lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Make visual and aural observations.
  • Must be willing and able to work in a variety of weather conditions with exposure to the elements.
  • Public Safety Officers are assigned to one of three specific shifts (8am-4pm, 4pm-12pm, 12pm-8am). This position is considered essential personnel and must fulfill their duties during periods of Reduced Operations (e.g., classes cancelled due to snow, University holidays).
  • Weekend work is required (based on shift) and overtime may be assigned as needed.
