Position Summary
This position is part of a team of employees that work together to help fulfill the mission and goals of the Department of Public Safety (DPS)


The Public Safety Officer (PSO) position exists for three reasons:
General Assistance

The first is to provide information and general assistance to the students, staff and other visitors of the College by being visible, approachable and available. In this regard, the PSO serves in a public relations capacity.
Safety

The second is to ensure the safety and security of campus visitors and facilities by patrolling the campus in order to observe the conduct and activities that take place on the premises.
Investigation

The third is to conduct preliminary investigations and, following appropriate procedures, document and report the outcome of the investigations.


This position is part of a team of professionals, which includes a variety of administrative and law enforcement personnel who are responsible for maintaining the peace and security of the campus. Along with the sworn officers in the department, the PSO acts as a liaison with federal, state and local police and fire officials.
Given the nature of the position, this position is responsible for crucial confidential data. S/he is expected to exercise sound judgment on issues that arise.
Minimum Requirements

  1. High School diploma or equivalent.

  2. Demonstrated dependability, reliability, professionalism, and ethical behavior.

  3. Must maintain a valid Michigan Driver's license and have a good driving record for the past 5 years. A good driving record must be maintained while employed as a Public Safety Officer.

  4. Must possess the ability to work under high stress environment/situations.

  5. Knowledge and experience using standard word processing software, such as MS Word.

  6. Must possess excellent customer service skills and demonstrate effective oral and written communication skills.

  7. Ability to use discretion in regard to matters of confidentiality, interactions and decision making.


Additional Desirable Qualifications

  1. Prior security or public safety experience.

  2. Some college with preference given to those with Associates or Bachelor's degree.

  3. Previous experience working at MCC in Department of Public Safety.

  4. Certificate of completion from a certified dispatch school.

  5. Knowledge of motor vehicle accident investigation and preparation of Uniform Traffic Accident Report, parking violations and ticket writing procedures.

  6. Knowledge of physical security procedures.

  7. Knowledge of patrol procedures, techniques, and the obtaining of information.

  8. Knowledge of criminal and non-criminal report writing.

  9. Knowledge of basic first aid, cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and Automated External Defibrillator (AED).


Physical Requirements/Working Conditions

  1. Ability to move about the campus while also having the ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time during the assigned shift.

  2. Ability to add numbers and write narrative criminal, non-criminal, injury and other reports in English using correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.

  3. Ability to prepare a daily activity log in English, using correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling.

  4. Ability to listen effectively to person or persons talking about a matter that requires one to make a decision as well as the ability to interview a person or persons in order to separate facts from opinion and first-hand knowledge from hearsay.

  5. Ability to recognize and use regular and military time.

  6. Ability to detect people talking in a normal voice without directly looking at them, either over the telephone or in person (within a distance of 6 feet).

  7. Visual ability, corrected, to observe and detect person(s) motor vehicles and tornado funnel clouds from great distances away (at least 600 feet) in the daylight.

  8. Visual ability to read in daylight and with the aid of a flashlight at night, items used by person(s) for identification; such as driver's licenses, school identification cards, and social security cards etc.

  9. Visual ability to read motor vehicle license plate letters and numbers at night with the aid of motor vehicle headlights from a distance of 10 feet.

  10. Ability to operate motor vehicles (i.e., pickup trucks, sedans, SUV's and golf carts) using an automatic gearshift on routine patrol and on emergency responses.
