Job summary

American University is seeking Public Safety Aides (PSAs) to assist with parking enforcement, office work, and event staffing on campus. This part-time role offers hands-on campus exposure and opportunities to interact with university leadership while supporting safety and sustainability efforts.

Eligible students must be enrolled at American University, maintain a 2.5 GPA, and be capable of walking/standing for extended periods. Flexible hours include evenings and weekends.

Job Description

Summary: Public Safety Aides (PSAs) assist the Office of Parking & Commuter Services by conducting parking enforcement patrols, office work, traffic direction, staffing for special events, and other exciting opportunities. This is an exceptional opportunity for a student to familiarize themselves with campus, establish contact with university administrators, and meet high-profile individuals. It is also an excellent starting point for students interested in careers in sustainability, transportation, and security services.

Essential Functions

• Enforce parking policies on all campus properties.
• Provide customer service to all campus community members and guests.
• Maintain consistent communication with supervisors via radio and phone.
• Positively represent the PSA program, the Office of Parking and Commuter Services, the American University Police Department, and the University as a whole.
• Provide support to the American University Police Department when necessary, often during special events such as Commencement or Move-In.
• Follow PSA policies/procedures and the directions of supervisory staff.

Position Type/Expected Hours of Work

Part-time. 9 - 15 hours per week.

Salary Range

$18.40 - $20.15 per hour.

Required Education and Experience

• Strong customer service skills.
• Excellent attention to detail.
• Ability to walk and stand for extended periods of time.
• Successfully complete all new hire paperwork and pass initial training.
• Incoming or current AU student.
• Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5.
• University Safety & Security Services reserves the right to review students’ academic and judicial records.

Preferred Education and Experience

• Experience with iPhone-based applications and handheld radios.
• Ability to handle challenging situations.

Additional Eligibility Qualifications

• More hours are available with promotion.
• Availability for Move-In, Move-Out, & Commencement Activities, with early move-in and late move-out available for on-campus residents.
• Availability during the hours of 8 am - 10 pm, weekdays and weekends.
