Job summary

The MFA is seeking a Public Relations Associate to join its Marketing and Communications team in Boston. You will write and edit press materials, conduct media outreach, monitor outlets, and create engaging content for the Museum’s social channels.

You will also assist with imaging, press events, and budget-related tasks. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Communications, you will collaborate with cross-functional teams and help raise awareness of MFA exhibitions, programs, and initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • 1–3 years of communications experience with strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and with diverse teams on multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Familiarity with social media platforms, especially Instagram and TikTok, and ability to create platform-specific content.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for events.

Responsibilities

  • Write and edit press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, and other press materials; maintain the advance exhibition schedule.
  • Conduct media outreach to local, regional, and national outlets to promote MFA initiatives, exhibitions, and programs.
  • Compile and distribute press materials to journalists; greet and escort journalists and crews within the Museum.
  • Monitor media coverage and social media for MFA and industry news; support daily press coverage distribution and filing.
  • Collaborate with the Creative Coordinator to secure images for press use and manage image requests.
  • Coordinate logistics for exhibition press previews, events, and PR programs with cross-department teams.
  • Create media distributions using the Cision database and update the press room on mfa.org.
  • Brainstorm and create original content for MFA’s social channels.
  • Film and edit short-form video content on iPhone using tools like Instagram Edits and CapCut.
  • Assist with tracking user-generated content and influencer outreach; support annual budget process.

Public Relations Associate

The Public Relations Associate plays an essential role on the Marketing and Communications team, which is responsible for reinforcing the MFA’s brand, driving attendance, and supporting revenue-driving initiatives. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Communications, this position is responsible for writing and editing press materials; conducting media outreach to local, regional, and national outlets to promote MFA initiatives, exhibitions, and programs; monitoring news outlets and compiling ongoing media coverage; and creating engaging content for the Museum’s social media channels.

Essential Functions:

  • Write and edit press releases, media advisories, fact sheets, and other press materials. Maintain the advance exhibition schedule.
  • Conduct media outreach to local, regional and national outlets to promote select Museum initiatives, exhibitions, and programs.
  • Compile and distribute press materials to journalists. Greet and escort journalists, television crews, and photographers within the Museum.
  • Monitor media outlets and social media channels for MFA coverage and relevant industry news. Support the Marketing and Communications Officer with the daily distribution of Museum coverage for staff and organizing and maintaining the press coverage filing system. Create individual PDFs for major coverage and compile exhibition coverage reports.
  • Collaborate with Creative Coordinator on securing images for press use. Facilitate image requests from journalists and create contact sheets with credit information.
  • Coordinate logistics for exhibition press previews, events and other PR-related programs, working with departments across the Museum.
  • Create media distributions using the Cision database and update the press room on mfa.org.
  • Brainstorm and create original content for the MFA’s social media channels.
  • Film and edit short-form video content on iPhone using tools such as Instagram Edits and CapCut.
  • Assist with tracking user-generated content and outreach to influencers.
  • Process and track vendor and consultant invoices and assist Manager of Marketing and Promotions on annual budget process.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, journalism, public relations, or a related field.
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of communications experience, with a proven track record of strong project management and organizational skills.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills with strong attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently, as well as with a variety of teams, and effectively handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
  • Deep familiarity with social media platforms—in particular, Instagram and TikTok—and the ability to create engaging, platform-specific content.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekendsfor events.
