Job summary

The Asian Art Museum in San Francisco seeks a Public Programs and Events professional to support the Director of Public Programs and Engagement in developing, implementing, and evaluating a range of public programs for diverse audiences.

You will manage production workflows, coordinate project meetings, review budgets, and help ensure engaging visitor experiences across the full program lifecycle including outreach, registration, accessibility, and post-event analysis.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, arts management, education, or related field.
  • 3–4 years’ full-time or equivalent experience producing public programs in a museum or cultural setting.
  • Experience managing development of community-based programs.
  • Existing connections with SF Bay Area community stakeholders preferred.
  • Knowledge of Asian and/or Asian American art and culture.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Support the Director of Public Programs and Engagement in developing, implementing, and evaluating a range of public programs for diverse audiences.
  • Responsible for team-level project management of public programs. Ensure project deadlines are communicated and successfully met.
  • Manage existing and new production workflows for public programs, including coordinating project meetings and reviewing spending against budgets, tasks, and timelines with all relevant stakeholders.
  • Document and evaluate programs and initiatives. Work with the Director of Public Programs and Engagement to analyze and communicate evaluation outcomes.
  • Undertake research for programs, including gathering background information about artists, performers, and potential community partners.
  • Maintain the public programs calendar and work with colleagues in Audience Engagement and other departments to support the visitor experience and promote all programs and events.
    Partner with Guest Experience and Volunteer Programs staff to develop event logistics, volunteer assignments, and guest engagement that supports welcoming and high-quality visitor experiences.
  • Coordinate and improve pre-event, onsite, and post-event operations to analyze program impact and the visitor journey (audience communication, accessibility, wayfinding, etc.)
  • Work closely with colleagues in Development on sponsorships, grant writing, and reporting.
  • Build trusting relationships across the museum, including Curatorial, Learning and Civic Engagement, Exhibition Design and Production, Audience Engagement, Marketing, and Branding, Communications, Financial, and other key internal partners.
  • Write program descriptions, program notes, and program introductions. Check cross-museum outreach for programmatic accuracy.
  • Act as the liaison between the museum and local community organizations and partners.
  • Perform other duties as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in art history, art education, arts management, education, or other related field, with demonstrable interest in Asian and Asian American art desired, or equivalent related experience.
  • 3–4 years’ full-time or equivalent experience producing public programs in a museum or cultural setting.
  • Demonstrated event production and program management skills and experience, and experience managing the development of community-based programs.
  • Existing connections with San Francisco Bay Area community stakeholders, visual artists, performing artists, and/or other cultural community stakeholders preferred.
  • Knowledge of or experience with Asian and/or Asian American art and culture.
  • Experience designing, supporting, and evaluating visitor experiences across the full guest journey, including program outreach, registration, accessibility, customer service, and program engagement.
  • Proven track record of successful program/project management, effective leadership, and staff supervision.
  • Experience working across multiple digital engagement and project management platforms.
  • Exceptional interpersonal skills and a positive, flexible demeanor.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Superior attention to detail, organizational skills, and ability to multi-task.
  • Experience training, supervising, and collaborating with volunteers and frontline event staff.
  • Ability to work both independently and collaboratively.
  • Successful audience development, program evaluation, and grant writing.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office (PowerPoint, Publisher and Excel, Word) and facility for learning other standard office and project management software programs.

WORKING CONDITIONS

Physical Environment

  • Standard museum and office environment, including gallery spaces with variable lighting, ambient noise from public programming, and occasional exposure to art-handling or installation activities.
  • Occasional travel to off-site locations for meetings and events.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk working on a computer.
  • Extended use of a computer monitor, tablet, stylus, phone, and other technology; sustained visual concentration required.
  • Ability to stand and move for extended periods throughout museum spaces.
  • Occasional lifting or carrying of materials up to 25 pounds.

Schedule and Availability

  • Full-time schedule, must be available to work on evenings and weekends onsite to support museum events and public programs.
  • Ability to work up to two days per week remotely, if operational needs allow and supervisor approves.

Cognitive and Sensory Demands

  • High degree of sustained concentration, creative problem-solving, and attention to detail required throughout the day.
  • Must be able to manage multiple concurrent projects under deadline pressure while maintaining quality.

Compensation The Asian Art Museum is committed to practicing salary transparency. The minimum salary for this position is $36.7070 per hour and the maximum salary is $44.0860 per hour. Please note that the pay range information is a general guideline only. Many factors are taken into consideration when setting starting pay, including education, experience, the external labor market, and internal equity.
