The role reports to the Policy Director and involves developing advocacy strategies, building coalitions, preparing witnesses, and communicating complex issues to diverse audiences. Remote-friendly, full-time exempt.

Qualifications

  • College graduate with a passion for free expression and access to knowledge, public policy, an interest in technology, and a demonstrated interest in the political process and advocacy in the public interest.
  • Law or other Graduate degree(s) a plus
  • Five or more years of experience in civil society organizations, Capitol Hill, Federal agencies, or other relevant policy‐related experience
  • Experience conducting legislative or issue advocacy and developing partnerships with a wide range of organizations and constituencies to advance desired policies
  • Experience creating or working with documents to articulate, influence, and persuade others, including legal/advocacy documents such as briefs, one-pagers, and legislative text
  • General understanding of the influences of the regulatory and government agencies and the legislative process
  • Demonstrated ability to research, analyze, formulate, and communicate policy positions in a way others can understand and internalize
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple projects simultaneously
  • Sound analytical and logic skills and the ability to develop and convey arguments to influence and persuade others
  • Strong communication skills
  • A creative self-starter who can devise and lead outreach efforts and lead and work in coalition
  • A willingness and ability to learn complex technological and legal issues quickly
  • The ability to produce high-quality results on tight deadlines and with little oversight

Responsibilities

  • Research, analyze, and recommend policy positions for Public Knowledge on promoting an open internet, broadband accessibility, and affordability, and adoption, compatible with PK’s positions on other topics, including intellectual property, free expression and competition.
  • Contribute as needed on other Public Knowledge priority technology policy issues that affect consumers and technology users.
  • Continuously monitor and research technological, political, legal, legislative, and social developments in assigned issues and lead efforts to achieve Public Knowledge’s policy goals in these areas.
  • Partner with colleagues in Public Knowledge's Government Affairs team to develop a shared advocacy strategy and approach to Capitol Hill to advance policy goals.
  • Develop relationships with key decision-makers in industry and civil society, including academia, to develop positions and build support for Public Knowledge’s priorities.
  • Lead, convene, and work in coalitions with various stakeholder groups to develop priorities and strategies to support policy goals.
  • Develop relationships with key relevant policymakers at the Federal Communications Commission, Federal Trade Commission, the White House, Congress, and elsewhere to build support for Public Knowledge’s priorities.
  • Develop Public Knowledge advocacy materials (blog posts, white papers, briefings, social media posts, etc), help prepare witnesses for Congressional testimony, and represent Public Knowledge at events, panels, conferences, and other forums to advance Public Knowledge’s policy goals.
  • Serve as a spokesperson and resource to the media within areas of expertise.
