Job summary

The Legislative Services Agency in Iowa is seeking a Legal Counsel to begin in fall 2026. The LSA supports the Iowa General Assembly with drafting legislation, conducting legal research, and advising legislators to craft clear, enforceable laws.

A law degree is required, with a strong preference for Iowa bar admission. Applicants must excel in analytical writing, manage heavy workloads during the legislative session, and contribute to Iowa Code publications.

Qualifications

• Law degree required; Bar admission preferred in Iowa.
• Strong drafting, research, and analytical skills.
• Ability to handle heavy workload under tight deadlines; overtime during session.

Responsibilities

• Draft legislation for all 150 state legislators, staff legislative committees, and assist in publication of the Iowa Code.
• Consult with legislators and governmental officials; provide analyses, explanations, and summaries of legislation and court decisions.
• Staff and advise legislative committees on legislation, law, administrative rules, and opinions of the courts and Attorney General.
• Perform administrative duties and prepare minutes, reports, and other work products for legislative committees.
• Provide information and assistance on status of legislation to other governmental agencies and the public.
