Job summary

State of North Carolina is seeking a Medical Laboratory Technician (S) to join the Central Accessioning Unit at the North Carolina State Laboratory of Public Health. You will perform routine pre-analytical tasks, ensure specimens meet regulatory requirements, and accession them using Lab Web Portal and LIMS while maintaining data integrity.

The role emphasizes standardized procedures, quality expectations, PPE use, and collaboration with multiple internal units to sustain efficient operations.

Qualifications

• Associate’s degree in medical technology or completion of a certified laboratory assistant course.
• High school diploma with two years of medical laboratory experience or equivalent.
• Eligibility for CLIA Testing Personnel requirements must be met.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily Central Accessioning receiving tasks to prioritize specimens and advance them through pre-analytical steps.
• Monitor Lab Web Portal and LIMS to confirm specimens move to the next processing stage promptly.
• Check specimen acceptability against requirements and accession high-volume specimens for multiple tests.
• Document specimen discrepancies and communicate with providers, staff, and couriers to maintain data integrity.
• Operate and perform basic maintenance on pre-analytical instruments, including label printers and bulk-loaders.
• Follow PPE, safety protocols, and SOPs to ensure compliant pre-analytical workflows.
• Attend training sessions and support quality improvement activities aligned with CLIA and SLPH practices.
• Collaborate with clerical/data entry, customer service, mailroom, and lab units to ensure accurate routing.
