Job summary

The Department of Public Health in South Carolina is seeking a Laboratory professional to perform high-complexity molecular biology analyses in support of infectious disease investigations and outbreak response. The role includes PCR, MALDI-TOF, sequencing, QA/QC responsibilities, and after-hours on-call duties.

Applicants should hold a related bachelor's or an equivalent associate degree with journey-level experience, and be able to travel for emergencies if needed.

Qualifications

• A bachelor's degree in a related medical or scientific discipline; or an associate degree or equivalent training and journey-level work experience in a related field.
• Institutions of Higher Learning must be recognized by the Council for Higher Education Accreditation.
• Must be able to pass the Criminal Justice Information Services’ Bioterrorism Security Risk Assessment. Must be able for 24-hour on call duty, overnight travel, and occasional weekend and holiday work.
• Ability to take the Smallpox and Ebola vaccination is strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

• Performs Molecular Biology based, high complexity analyses and related testing for infectious diseases and outbreaks.
• Operates and maintains PCR, TRF, MALDI-TOF, and sequencing instrument systems and related equipment.
• Maintains records of patient specimens, test results, and QA/QC documentation.
• Provides technical consultation to clinicians, laboratory scientists, and public health staff.
• Responds to emergencies and may involve travel or after-hours coverage.
