Job Summary

Under general supervision, is responsible for providing nursing care and related nursing services under the direction of a Public Health Physician and senior level professional nursing staff. Working conditions are primarily inside an office environment with occasional exposure to hazardous materials, bodily fluids and frequent exposure to infectious diseases. Exercises functional supervision over assigned staff.

The San Antonio Metro Health District (SAMHD) provides public health services to clients, which may include risk for exposure to and possible transmission of vaccine-preventable diseases. Employees in high-risk positions will be required to obtain relevant immunizations, per Review and consideration will be given to requests for exemption from this policy.

Work Location

This position requires regular work at a minimum of two locations : City Tower - 100 W. Houston Street, 14th Floor, San Antonio, TX (78205) and Metro Health STI / HIV Clinic - 512 E. Highland Blvd, San Antonio, TX (78210) with the potential for assignments at additional sites based on business needs. Job duties may require travel to various locations in San Antonio and Bexar County.

Work Hours

8 : 00 a.m. - 5 : 00 p.m., Monday - Friday. Occasional work outside of regular hours to include before 8 : 00 a.m., between 12 : 00 p.m. - 1 : 00 p.m., evenings and weekends based on client needs.

Essential Job Functions

  • Provides up-to-date, evidence-based public health information to staff, clients, other professionals and the public, including but not limited to sexual and reproductive health, immunizations, HIV prevention and others.
  • Conveys information regarding the policies, functions, and philosophy of the departments professional organizations and other community groups as assigned.
  • Participates in case conferences with physicians, hospital personnel, and representatives of other agencies.
  • Provides skilled nursing care to individuals (adults and adolescents closed parentheses at the metro health clinic, in accordance with the Standing Delegation Orders (SDO's).
  • Administers medications, vaccines, and lab work in accordance with proper standards.
  • Assesses client needs and follows up with appropriate referral for problems at a clinical level.
  • Serves as a consultant to clinical providers to optimize the integration of public health prevention practices and methods.
  • Conduct outreach to and training of primary care, pediatric, OB / GYN and other providers to integrate public health principles and prevention initiatives in clinical practice.
  • Maintains an inventory of equipment and supplies; orders vaccines and other medical supplies.
  • Conveys information regarding the policies, functions, and philosophy of the department to professional organizations and other community groups as assigned.
  • Collects and compiles daily revenue reports.
  • Performs related duties and fulfills responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

  • Graduation from an accredited school of nursing.
  • Current CPR and First Aid Certification for Healthcare Providers.
  • License to practice as a registered nurse in the State of Texas.
  • Any applicant selected for this position must have a background check completed with results satisfactory to the City of San Antonio and successfully complete the City of San Antonio's Cash-Handling Certification Training.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Bachelor of Science in Nursing.
  • Experience Developing educational materials and presentations for health care providers.
  • Experience conducting virtual meetings and presentations.
  • Experience working in public health.
  • Experience communicating with health care providers.
  • Valid Class "C" Texas Driver's License.
  • Bilingual in English and Spanish.
  • Unless otherwise stated, applicants are permitted to substitute two years of related full-time experience for one year of higher education or one year of related higher education for two years of experience in order to meet the minimum requirements of the job. One year of full-time experience is defined as 30 or more hours worked per week for 12 months. One year of higher education is defined as 30 credit hours completed at an accredited college or university.

Ability to operate a computer keyboard and other basic office equipment.

Ability to apply professional nursing principles, techniques, and basic science in homes, clinics, and the community.

Ability to communicate clearly and effectively.

Ability to compile data and prepare routine reports.

Ability to exercise judgment in application of nursing care.

Ability to interact effectively and professionally with a wide variety of people on a daily basis.

Ability to stimulate patients and families to constructive and self improvement actions.

Ability to grasp and apply the basic principles of administration and operation of a health program.
