Job description

Join to apply for the PUBLIC HEALTH DENTIST role at Cleveland County

Delivers effective and efficient patient care in compliance with established clinical protocols while maintaining independent professional responsibility for patient care. Works to meet agency goals within departmental guidelines as administered by the Public Health Program Manager. Provides services in fixed clinics, mobile dental facilities, or community-based settings. Collaborates with local health agencies and schools for dental health education and direct care services. Performs intermediate skilled human support work under supervision of the Nursing Director. Typical work hours are Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm during the school year and 8:00 am - 5:00 pm during summer months at the Health Department.

Essential Functions And Responsibilities Include
  1. Perform dental exams, diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative or palliative treatments, and oral health education within operational guidelines.
  2. Consult with local healthcare providers to ensure appropriate dental treatment.
  3. Deliver talks to community groups to promote dental health programs and awareness.
  4. Participate in staff meetings and review procedures for quality assurance.
  5. Attend professional development meetings and maintain licensure requirements.
  6. Supervise chair-side performance of dental assistants and hygienists.
Education & Experience

Graduate with a DMD or DDS from an accredited university or college. Prior experience in general dentistry and pediatrics preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
  • Thorough knowledge of clinical dentistry for adults and children, and basic public health principles.
  • Sensitivity to low-income and minority communities.
  • Excellent communication and customer service skills.
  • Strong organizational, interpersonal, and leadership skills.
  • Attention to detail, with excellent written, verbal, and reading skills.
  • Sound judgment, critical thinking, and decision-making abilities.
  • Proficient computer skills.
  • Ability to operate agency motor vehicles.
License & Certifications
  • Valid driver’s license and insurable record.
  • Active North Carolina dental license.
  • Controlled Substance Certificate (DEA).
  • Current CPR certification.
Work Environment / Physical Requirements

Includes repetitive motions, finger dexterity, and arm-hand steadiness. Ability to move and transport equipment, sit/stand for extended periods, and work outdoors as needed. Reasonable accommodations available for disabilities.

Additional Information

This position is subject to random drug screening and may require participation in the State Emergency Response Team during emergencies.
