Summary:
Delivers effective and efficient patient care in compliance with established clinical protocols while maintaining independent professional responsibility for patient care while working to meet agency goals and within departmental guidelines as administered by the Public Health Program Manager. Dentists in this position may provide services in a fixed clinic, mobile dental facility or in a community-based setting. The dentist works with local health agencies and schools to provide dental health education and direct care services for patients. Performs intermediate skilled human support work assisting in the provision of dental services. Work is performed under and supervised by the Nursing Director. The normal work schedule would include Monday - Friday, 7:30 am - 4:00 pm with a 30-minute lunch during the school year and Monday-Friday 8:00a-5:00p during the summer months at the Health Department.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities include:
" Performs dental exams, oral diagnosis, treatment planning, restorative or palliative treatment, and oral health education as professionally indicated and within operational guidelines of the dental program.
" Consults and communicates with local health care providers as necessary to assure appropriate dental treatment is rendered to individual patients.
" May be requested to prepare and deliver talks to community groups and agencies for the purpose of explaining the agency's dental health program and to stimulate interest in community dental health issues.
" Participates in staff conferences including evaluation and modification of procedures followed in the dental clinic.
" Participates in audits of dental treatment records to assure quality assurance in patient care.
" Attends professional meetings to maintain and update professional skills necessary to meet standard of care for treatment of adult and pediatric patients; assumes responsibility for attaining mandated CE requirements for continued dental licensure in NC.
" This position directs chair-side performance of dental assistants and dental hygienists.

Education & Experience:
Graduate of and have a DMD or DDS degree from a university or college accredited by the Commission of Dental Accreditation of the American Dental Association. Prior experience in general dentistry and pediatrics preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
" Thorough knowledge in the practice of clinical dentistry for adults and children, as well as basic principles of public health dental practice
" Sensitivity to low income and ethnic minority community a must
" Excellent customer service with the ability to establish and maintain effective communication with clients, co-workers and the general public
" Organizing and prioritizing workload and meeting deadlines
" Establish and maintain effective interpersonal work relationships utilizing emotional intelligence skills
" Demonstrate positive example leadership
" Must be detail oriented, with excellent written, verbal communication, and reading comprehension skills
" Ability to exercise sound judgment, critical thinking and decision making, active listening and initiative
" Must possess excellent computer skills
" Ability to operate the agency motor vehicles

License & Certifications:
Valid driver's license and insurable driver's record.
Active license to practice dentistry in North Carolina.
Active Controlled Substance Certificate (DEA) license.
Current CPR certification.
Spanish language skills desirable but not required.
This position is subject to random drug screenings.

Work Location:
This role must work from the location(s) identified at the time of hire with work travel required as needed. Any change of work location, even on a short-term or interim basis, must be reviewed by the Supervisor and HR for approval.

By General Statue 166A-19.3, Departments of Health and Human Services are agencies that are a part of the State Emergency Response Team for occurrences or imminent threat of widespread or severe damage, injury, or loss of life or property resulting from any natural or man-made accidental, military, paramilitary, terrorism, weather-related, public health, explosion-related, riot-related cause, or technological failure or accident, including, but not limited to, a cyber incident, an explosion, a transportation accident, a radiological accident, or a chemical or other hazardous material incident. In the event that the State Emergency Response Team is activated, this position will be required to participate if deemed necessary.
