Job summary

The City of Hampton seeks a Streets & Bridges Construction Inspector II to ensure streets, bridges, water and sewer lines, and storm drainage projects meet approved plans and standards. You will inspect construction work, read plans, and enforce safety and quality controls on-site to maintain essential public services.

Working under general supervision, you will plan and complete inspections, coordinate with contractors, and document findings to support reliable infrastructure.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or GED is required.
• Three years of full-time equivalent experience in road/bridge or related construction.
• Some college coursework in civil engineering or a related field is preferred.
• Ability to read and interpret engineering/construction plans and surveyor markers.

Responsibilities

• Inspect streets, bridges, utilities, and drainage projects to ensure compliance with plans, specs, regulations, and standards.
• Plan and complete inspection activities under general supervision.
• Document findings and coordinate with contractors to ensure safety and quality on public infrastructure projects.

Minimum Requirements

• High school graduation or successful completion of GED
• Three (3) years of full-time equivalent experience in the construction of roads, bridges, utility or related projects required or closely related experience.
• Some college-level courses in civil engineering or a related field preferred.
• Must be able to read and interpret engineering and construction plans and surveyor markers.
• A combination of education and experience may be considered for this position.
• The following outlines certifications that are preferred upon hire, but required to obtain within one (1) year of employment:
  • Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ)
  • Erosion & Sediment Control Inspector
    • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
    • Material Certifications in Soils & Aggregate Compaction
    • Materials Certification in Slurry Seal
  • In addition, the following requirements must be met at the time of hire:
    • Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT)
    • Material Certifications in Asphalt Field Levels 1 & 2
    • Pavement Marking Certification
    • Intermediate Work Zone training certification
    • ACI (American Concrete Institute):
    • Concrete Field Testing Technician – Grade I
    • Must possess a valid driver’s license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton’s criteria.
    • Must successfully pass a background check prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
    • This position is safety sensitive and is subject to testing for alcohol and controlled substances in accordance with the City of Hampton’s current substance abuse policy.
    • Must possess a state of Virginia Commercial Driver License (CDL) Class B with Tanker (N) endorsement within 180 days of employment.

Additional Requirements

The incumbent may be considered “essential personnel” during City emergency situations or at the direction of the City Manager which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
