Job summary

Oakland University is seeking Peer Mentors for the 2026-2027 Academic Year to support the Upward Bound College Prep Academy. Positions are hourly and limited to three openings, with supervision by the Project Director/Lead PM.

Hours are up to 25 per week, mainly after-school and some Saturdays, with hybrid work on campus or at target schools. Mentors will engage students, facilitate programming, and monitor student progress.

Qualifications

• Sophomore status or higher is required.
• GPA 2.50 or higher with proof is required.
• Demonstrate Standard English proficiency in cover letter and resume.
• Leadership, communication, social, and role modeling skills.
• Previous involvement with ethnically diverse youth populations.
• Demonstrated integrity and commitment to keeping your word.

Responsibilities

• Assist in PUB Office with social/cultural experiences and programming.
• Attend and participate in scheduled activities.
• Facilitate PUB programming as directed by Lead PM.
• Maintain mentoring relationships with Scholars and guardians.
• Conduct mentoring sessions at least twice monthly with mentees and one group session.

Peer Mentor (PM) Job Description

Hourly Pay Rate:$15/hr. Supervisor:Project Director/Lead PM Positions available:3

General Work Days/Hours

(up to 25 hours/wk):

• Mondays through Thursdays generally between 3:00 pm and 8:30 pm
• 1-2 Saturdays per month between 7:45 am and 3:30 pm

All PMs are not required to work all hours. PUB attempts to accommodate successful applicants’ class schedules. PMs who excel in performance may be identified to chaperone day and overnight field trips and/or considered for 2025 Summer Academy Peer Mentor employment opportunities.

Position Purpose:

• Support PUB’s student retention objective by helping to keep PUB Scholars engaged
• Support PUB’s postsecondary enrollment objective by helping to facilitate social, cultural, and career enrichment programming
• Support PUB’s postsecondary completion objective by providing guidance and general advising, moral and emotional support, and redirection as needed so that PUB Scholars begin modeling behaviors that support college success

Work Conditions:

• PMs will work in a hybrid environment – virtual and live on the OU campus or at target schools (transportation provided)
• Work time must be documented by swiping in and out to get paid

Primary Duties/Requirements:

• Assist in the PUB Office with other PUB functions, and particularly social/cultural experiences to better learn about PUB
• Attend and participate in scheduled activities
• Assist, as directed, in facilitating PUB programming
• Establish and maintain positive, respectful, and appropriate mentoring relationships w/Scholars and parents/guardians/caretakers as available to engage their support of mentoring efforts
• Conduct mentoring sessions with assigned mentees at least twice monthly – once with each individual Scholar to check up on academic performance, social engagement, and emotional well-being as well as progress toward graduation; and one group session to present productive programming focusing on the college experience.
• Assist the Lead PM to facilitate PUB Flight 60 – an orientation for new admits
• Clarify, monitor, and enforce Project student conduct policies and procedures
• Address observed or referred inappropriate Scholar behaviors or other concerns that potentially generate barriers to educational and social success
• As assigned, chaperone day and/or overnight field trips
• Submit accurate, timely, and detailed work/service documentation to the Lead PM

Minimum Qualifications/Prerequisites:EMPLOYMENT CONTINGENT ON ACCEPTABLE BACKGROUND CHECK

• Sophomore or higher class standing
• Verified 2.50 or higher cumulative GPA at accredited college/university (submit proof)
• Demonstrate Standard English proficiency in cover letter, resume, and interview.
• Leadership, communication, social, and role modeling skills (list on resume)
• Previous active positive involvement with ethnically diverse youth populations (list on resume)
