Job summary

Midland College in Midland, TX invites applications for a part-time Lab Instructor in Fire Science Technology. The instructor will assist classroom staff in coordinating and facilitating labs for the Basic Firefighter certificate program and help prepare, supervise, and assess student lab activities.

The ideal candidate has an associate degree and strong English communication, plus at least three years of fire service experience and current Texas Fire Protection certifications.

Qualifications

  • Minimum three years experience in the provision of fire services.
  • Current minimum required certifications: Texas Commission on Fire Protection Firefighter-Basic and Instructor I
  • Knowledge of modern municipal fire service principles, practices, and procedures, including operation and maintenance of fire apparatus and equipment used in training.
  • Proficient in the English language.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

Responsibilities

  • Maintain required Texas Commission on Fire Protection (TCFP) certifications.
  • Develop proficiency with TCFP requirements for Basic Fire Suppression training programs.
  • Maintain academic and programmatic records as required by Midland College and TCFP, and submit documentation in a timely manner.
  • Participate in the instruction of Firefighter certificate lab courses.
  • Prepare lab for classes, help dismantle and clean up after lab activities.
  • Demonstrate the proper use of lab equipment and hazardous or bio-hazardous materials.
  • Provide leadership and positive role modeling for students.
  • Educate and assist students with learning of the various skills necessary for fire service.
  • Evaluate student performance.
  • Conduct formative and summative assessment of student learning.
  • Create and maintain a positive learning environment, displaying and requiring professionalism in all activities.
  • Work collaboratively with Midland Fire Department and other affiliates on meeting program goals and learning outcomes.
  • Adapt and apply laboratory methods, practices, and techniques.
  • Follow health and safety procedures and regulations.
  • Work with minimal direct supervision.
  • Other duties as assigned

Required Qualifications

WORK ENVIRONMENT
  • Typical office
  • Business Hours
  • M-Th 8:00 a.m.- 5:00 p.m. F 8:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
  • summer M-Th 7:30 a.m. – 5:30 pm
  • Periodic evening and weekend hours during peak periods (e.g., open enrollment, payroll)
  • Occasional travel (less than 10%)
Physical Demands:
  • Must be able to lift or move equipment (up to 40 pounds) required for teaching in the program
  • Must be able to ambulate to supervise students in the training environments
  • Must be able to sit or stand for long periods of time
  • Use of manual dexterity
  • Travel to training sites is required
