ABOUT THE POSITON

The teaching assignment may be at the Liberal Arts campus, the Trade, Technology and Community Learning campus or other college teaching locations. The assignment may be day, evening, weekend, online or off campus and is subject to change as needed. Part-time faculty positions are as needed positions and do not accrue rights to tenure. Part-time faculty positions offer flexible hours and the opportunity to assist a diverse group of adult students in achieving their educational goals. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

• Master’s in African American Studies, Black Studies, Africana Studies, Latino Studies, La Raza Studies, Chicana/o Studies, Asian American Studies, Native American Studies, or American Indian Studies; OR
• Master’s in Ethnic Studies; OR
• the equivalent; AND
• Evidence of a sensitivity, understanding, and ability to manage the classroom environment AND effectively provide instruction to community college students of diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds.

LOCAL EQUIVALENCY

An earned Master’s degree in a related field such as history, political science, urban studies, women’s studies, area studies, sociology, humanities, or social science including 18 units of upper-division and graduate semester units in Ethnic Studies, American Studies/Ethnicity, Latino Studies, Chicano Studies, La Raza Studies, Central American Studies, Latin American Studies, Race and Ethnic Relations, Asian American Studies, African American Studies, Afro-American Studies, Africana Studies or Black Studies. Coursework must cover one or more of the four core groups identified in AB 1460 (Native Americans, African Americans, Latina/o Americans and/or Asian Americans.)

DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS

• Two years of recent experience teaching Ethnic Studies-related courses to college students, especially at the community college level.
• Concentrations in Black Studies or Native American Studies are of particular interest
• Evidence of a commitment to equitable teaching outcomes.
• Evidence of sensitivity to and understanding of working with students from diverse cultural, ethnic, socioeconomic, academic, and disability backgrounds.
• Evidence of the ability to use a variety of teaching strategies that encourage retention while successfully challenging a diverse student population.
• Evidence of an ability to communicate effectively utilizing verbal, written, and on-line communication skills.
• Desire and demonstrated ability to participate actively in department, division, and college committees and in the shared governance of Long Beach City College.
• Desire and demonstrated ability to take on leadership roles both within the department and in the institution as a whole.
