CUSTODIAN

DEFINITION

Under supervision of the Principal, Building Administrator, and direction from the Head Custodian, the custodian completes daily custodial duties for the Wayne Public Schools District. Responsibilities include cleaning, maintenance, and support of assigned buildings, with specific duties assigned by the District Custodial Supervisor in coordination with the Building Principal/Administrator and Head Custodian.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The role involves custodial cleaning, support, and minor operational problem-solving, exercising initiative and independence in following departmental policies and developing effective work practices.

KEY DUTIES

1. GROUNDS (Daily): Remove trash, maintain playground equipment, and perform grounds maintenance like mowing, trimming, and weeding.
2. LIGHTS: Replace bulbs, turn off lights in unoccupied rooms, and ensure outside lights are on before leaving.
3. CUSTODIAL CLEANING: Includes cleaning entrances, lobbies, corridors, classrooms, offices, restrooms, cafeterias, gyms, and other areas with specified daily, weekly, and monthly tasks.
4. OTHER DUTIES: Opening buildings, checking systems, minor repairs, assisting with setups, and emergency response.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

High School diploma or G.E.D. preferred, with five years of skilled custodial experience.

LICENSES

Valid driver’s license, Low Pressure Boiler License required.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS AND WORKING CONDITIONS

Must have physical strength, stamina, mobility, and the ability to work indoors and outdoors in all weather conditions, including snow removal, and operate tools and vehicles, lift up to 50 pounds, and communicate effectively.

KNOWLEDGE OF

Custodial operations, safety practices, policies, and regulations related to school custodial work.

SKILLS IN

Planning, prioritizing, scheduling, inspecting, minor repairs, following policies, and effective communication with staff and the public.
