Job summary

College of the Mainland seeks a part-time Food Market Assistant to join the COM Food Market team. You will work at the Front Desk, stock shelves, process guest intake, and help maintain a clean, safe shopping environment for students, faculty and staff.

Responsibilities include inventory management, licensing/compliance support, and delivering friendly customer service. You will use campus ID systems and market software, assist with deliveries, and uphold health and safety standards.

Job description

Enrich the lives of the College of the Mainland students, faculty and staff in the COM Food Market. The COM Food Market Assistant will serve at the Front Desk of the market, stocking shelves and ensure market guest intake runs smoothly and the shopping experience is effiecient and the market is a clean and safe. This position is responsible for the daily operations of the market, including inventory management, customer service, and maintaining health and safety standards.

  • Check in students using the campus ID system or market software to verify eligibility.
  • Answer the market telephone, responding to inquiries about hours, location, and donation policies.
  • Maintain strict confidentiality regarding students who utilize the market (adhering to FERPA and privacy standards).
  • Assist guests with weighing food items and/or counting items to ensure adherence to quantity limits.
  • Bag groceries for guests efficiently and carefully as needed.
  • Explain market rules and item limits to guests in a polite and helpful manner.
  • Receive deliveries and donations, inspecting items for quality and package integrity.

  • Utilize the First-In, First-Out ( FIFO ) method to minimize waste and ensure freshness.
  • Conduct regular inventory counts and report low-stock items to the supervisor.
  • Check expiration dates daily and remove expired items according to safety protocols.
  • Maintain a clean and organized market space, including sweeping, dusting shelves, and wiping down counters.
  • Break down cardboard boxes and remove trash/recycling to designated areas.
    Monitor refrigerator/freezer temperatures (if applicable) and log data to ensure food safety compliance.
  • Follow specific checklists for opening the market (turning on lights, checking messages, setting up displays) and closing (locking up, securing sensitive information, turning off equipment).

Physical Requirements

Positions in this class typically require: stooping, crouching, reaching, standing, walking, fingering, talking, hearing, seeing and repetitive motions.

Medium Work – Exerting 20 to 30 pounds of force occasionally, and/or 10 to 25 pounds of force frequently, and/or greater than negligible up to 10 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Physical Demand requirements are in excess of those for Light Work.
