Job summary

Priority Dispatch Corp. is seeking an Animal Caretaker in Baton Rouge to maintain kennels, sanitize living areas and ensure animals have clean water at all times.

The role requires following safety procedures, reporting health or housing issues, and using Pet Point for communications when applicable. You must be patient, compassionate, and able to work under pressure, with knowledge of animal handling, welfare standards, and shelter SOPs.

Responsibilities

• Clean, sanitize and maintain kennels and animal living areas daily
• Feed animals according to feeding protocols
• Ensure animals have free access to clean water at all times
• Inform supervisor of health issues or kennel repairs needed
• Utilize shelter communication systems (e.g., Pet Point) when applicable
• Maintain organized work areas and stock supplies
• Assist with enrichment activities
• Follow safety procedures when handling chemicals and cleaning supplies
• Physical tasks including lifting up to 50 pounds and standing for long periods

Title: Animal CaretakerDivision: Shelter OperationsReports To: Animal Care Supervisor / Shelter Senior ManagerJob duties include but are not limited to:Clean, sanitize and maintain kennels and animal living areas on a daily basis.Feed animals according to feeding protocols.Ensure animals have free choice of clean water at all timesFollow proper safety measures and procedures when using chemicals and cleaning supplies.Inform supervisor of any health issues with the animals.Inform supervisor of any kennels needing repair.When applicable, utilize Pet Point for all necessary communication (changing locations, updating behavior memos)Maintain a clean, organized, and properly stocked work areaMaintain laundry area, food prep area, and general storage, ensuring areas are kept clean, organized, and stocked at all timesAssist with enrichment activitiesKnowledge, skills and abilities needed to perform the essential functions of this position:Follow the mission of CAA.Enjoy working with animals and have a genuine concern for their care and well-being.Be familiar with all shelter Standard Operating Procedures and the Employee Manual.Self-starter.Working knowledge of breeds, diseases, medical conditions and animal handling and behavior.Ability to handle animals safely and with patience and gentleness.Ability to represent CAA in a professional manner in all situations with the public, volunteers and staff.Ability to create and sustain positive working relationships within CAA, with volunteers, the public and be a team player.Must be patient, courteous and work well under stressful conditions.Knowledge and ability to accurately work with detailed information in paper and computerized format.Ability to communicate effectively.Ability to learn and quickly adapt to changes in programs and procedures.Physical Demands: The work is performed in animal housing areas and shelter surroundings. Typical position requires workers to walk or stand for long periods; lift and carry up to 50 pounds; climb stairs, bend, reach, hold, grasp and turn objects.
