Job summary

The Cincinnati Reds seek a Psychology & Cognition Coach within Baseball Operations – Baseball Analytics to deliver applied psychology services across affiliates. You will support players and staff through sessions, education, and collaborative action planning with coaches.

Applicants should have a psychology degree with sport emphasis; CMPC or advanced degree preferred; familiarity with quantitative psychology and prior sports experience are advantageous.

  • Prior professional sports experience as a mental performance coach, player, or staff preferred

Responsibilities

  • Deliver best practices-based psychology services to players and staff across affiliates
  • Lead one-on-one, small group, and team sessions, in person or remotely
  • Develop action plans with coaches and staff emphasizing applied psychology
  • Create and deliver education sessions on applied psychology methods
  • Develop and refine psychological practices based on internal/external research and communicate findings to teams
  • Coordinate meetings and manage reporting across departments
  • Possess roving responsibilities to Reds minor league affiliates and Dominican Republic Academy

  • Degree in Psychology, required, with an emphasis in sport, performance, or related domains.
  • Certified Mental Performance Consultant (CMPC) and/or advanced degree in Psychology (masters, doctorate) preferred.
Experience
  • Familiarity with quantitative psychology (psychometrics, cognitive neuroscience, or similar domains).
  • Prior professional sports experience as a mental performance coach, player, or staff preferred.
Skills
  • Independent judgment and ability to multitask is required to plan, prioritize, and organize diversified workload.
  • Strong work ethic and willingness to work long, flexible hours including weekends and holidays.
  • Must be trustworthy and comfortable with managing sensitive information.
  • High level of interpersonal skills and be able to effectively communicate with wide range of departments, seniority levels and personalities.
  • Knowledge of a variety of computer software applications and communication platforms in word processing, spreadsheets, database and presentation software (Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, EMR and Slack).

  • Spoken and written fluency in English.
  • Spoken and written fluency in Spanish preferred.
  • Ability to travel within the United States and internationally.
  • This position requires roving responsibilities to Cincinnati Reds Minor League Affiliates and the Dominican Republic Academy.
Primary Duties & Responsibilities
Applied Psychology – 75%
  • Deliver best practices-based services and resources
  • Support players and staff across affiliates through the season, in-person and remotely
  • Lead one-on-one sessions as well as small group and team sessions
  • Implement education sessions around best psychology practices targeted for players, staff, and coaches
  • Work alongside staff and coaches to develop action plans for players, emphasizing applied psychology practices
Psychology Research & Development – 20%
  • Develop and refine psychological practices based off internal and external researchCommunicate findings from applied work to innovate research methods
  • Continue learning and updating knowledge and practice through the most current research available
  • Develop educational materials on applied psychology methods and tools
Administrative – 5%
  • Coordinate meetings between a variety of people and departments
  • Maintain and manage reporting and records
  • Other duties as assigned by the Baseball Analytics and Player Development.

  • Senior Director of Baseball Analytics

Physical Requirements
  • Ability to sit, stand, and walk for extended periods throughout the day.
  • Ability to lift, carry, push, and pull up to 25 pounds (equipment, medical equipment, etc.).
  • Ability to bend, squat, reach, and climb stairs regularly in the course of daily duties
  • Comfortable working in varying conditions (heat, humidity, cold, outdoors, confined spaces like locker rooms).
  • Ability to handle repetitive tasks.
  • Sufficient hand-eye coordination and manual dexterity for tasks like computer work, note-taking, etc.
  • Ability to work long shifts with long and variable hours, including weekends and holidays.
  • Ability to drive and/or fly short and long distances, day or night in various conditions.
  • Adhere to Cincinnati Reds Organization Policies and Procedures.
  • Act as a role model within and outside the Cincinnati Reds Organization.
  • Perform duties as workload necessitates.
  • Demonstrate flexible and efficient time management and the ability to prioritize workload.
  • Willingness to learn. Open to new methodologies.
