Job Description: Psychiatric Nurse at UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital

UPMC Western Psychiatric Hospital is seeking a dedicated Psychiatric Nurse to support the Integrated Health and Aging unit (IHAP 12th Floor) at our Oakland location.

The Integrated Health & Aging Program (IHAP) is a specialized program with 42 beds serving older adults experiencing psychiatric issues in late life, who may also be younger and often face physical, social, and environmental challenges.

This position involves day/evening rotations, with 8 and 12-hour shifts.

GN level candidate starting rate: $33.25 (BSN $34.75). Starting rate may be increased based on previous nursing experience.

Sign-on Bonus up to $15,000!

Responsibilities:
  1. Perform nursing assessments and initial care plans within 8 hours of patient admission.
  2. Orient and educate patients regarding their hospitalization.
  3. Document in the medical record according to established policies.
  4. Maintain current knowledge of medication policies, including side effects, dosages, and patient responses.
  5. Administer medications safely and accurately, including transcription, administration, and documentation.
  6. Demonstrate knowledge of DSM IV diagnoses through therapeutic interventions.
  7. Manage crisis situations effectively using positive approaches.
  8. Adhere to Nursing Standards and Policies, including ANA Standards for Psychiatric/Mental Health Nursing, ANA Professional Code for Nurses, WPIC policies, and the Nurse Practice Act.
  9. Perform point-of-care testing (e.g., glucose monitoring, urinalysis, Hemocults).
  10. Effectively perform charge RN responsibilities.
  11. Participate in program development and performance improvement activities.
  12. Engage in interdisciplinary activities, including treatment teams and staff meetings, and follow research protocols as required.
  13. Maintain competency requirements and attend in-services annually.
  14. Serve as a mentor to students and new employees.
  15. Utilize up-to-date technology in patient care delivery.
