Job description

Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP)

Samaritan Daytop Village is a leading human services organization in New York State serving over 38,000 New Yorkers annually across more than 60 locations through Transitional Housing, Community Based Services, and Residential and Outpatient programs. First Steps Intensive Crisis Stabilization Center (ICSC), operated by Samaritan Daytop Village in Rockland County, is a 24/7 program dually licensed by OMH and OASAS to provide rapid, short-term support for children ages 5+ and adults in mental health or substance use crisis. Our multidisciplinary team utilizes a trauma-informed, harm-reduction framework to stabilize individuals and connect them with long-term care while avoiding unnecessary emergency room visits.

Overview

We are seeking a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) to provide advanced psychiatric care, including evaluations, diagnoses, and medication management for individuals in crisis. Working within a 24/7 multidisciplinary team, you will manage integrated care for co-occurring disorders and provide essential interventions in an acute behavioral health setting. This role involves close collaboration with medical and clinical providers to deliver trauma‑informed, recovery‑oriented treatment. This is an excellent opportunity for a dedicated practitioner to apply high‑level clinical expertise to help patients navigate mental health and substance use emergencies.

Responsibilities
  • Performs comprehensive psychiatric evaluations, including clinical history, mental status exams, DSM‑5‑TR diagnosis, and risk assessments
  • Prescribes and manages medications for psychiatric and addiction‑related needs, including Medications for Opioid Use Disorder (MOUD) and withdrawal management agents
  • Conducts medication reconciliation and orders laboratory or toxicology studies to interpret results and adjust treatment plans accordingly
  • Collaborates with a multidisciplinary team—including psychiatrists, RNs, social workers, and peer specialists—to develop individualized discharge and safety plans
  • Participates in clinical rounds and safety planning to ensure effective disposition decisions in a crisis setting
  • Maintains accurate and timely documentation in the Electronic Health Record (Avatar) in compliance with OMH/OASAS regulations and HIPAA standards
  • Adheres to DEA, PMP/I‑STOP, and EPCS requirements, including the review of controlled substance history prior to prescribing
  • Provides essential education to patients and families regarding diagnoses, medications, harm reduction, and overdose prevention (including naloxone)
  • Engages in peer reviews, quality improvement initiatives (QA/PI), and ongoing professional continuing education
Qualifications
  • Master of Science in Nursing (MSN) or Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) with a Psychiatric Mental Health Nurse Practitioner (PMHNP) concentration
  • Active, unrestricted New York State Registered Professional Nurse license
  • Active, unrestricted New York State Nurse Practitioner certification in Psychiatric Mental Health (PMHNP‑BC) through ANCC
  • Active DEA registration with authority to prescribe buprenorphine and other controlled substances
  • Minimum of one (1) year of experience as a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner (PNP) or PMHNP preferred; new graduates with strong psychiatric nursing backgrounds considered
  • Experience with pediatric patients required
  • Experience in co‑occurring disorders, crisis services, inpatient psychiatry, or emergency psychiatry strongly preferred
  • Current CPR/BLS certification; ACLS preferred
  • Advanced clinical knowledge of psychopharmacology, withdrawal management, and MOUD (Medications for Opioid Use Disorder)
  • Expert assessment skills for suicide risk, agitation, psychosis, and intoxication or withdrawal
  • Familiarity with trauma‑informed, recovery‑oriented, and harm‑reduction clinical practices
  • Proficiency with Electronic Health Records (Avatar preferred) and EPCS requirements
  • Excellent collaborative communication skills for working with physicians, nurses, and non‑medical clinicians in a 24/7 crisis setting
