Job summary

The University of Utah's Division of Medical Genetics within the Department of Pediatrics is seeking a full-time Temporary Licensed Genetic Counselor to provide comprehensive genetic counseling services for genetic conditions to patients and families, under supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor. Location: Campus, Salt Lake City.

Responsibilities include risk assessment, interpretation of results, psychosocial support, coordination of referrals, and newborn screening follow-up, with a focus

Qualifications

• Current Temporary Genetic Counselor License in the State of Utah.
• Master's degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency (one year of education can be substituted for two years of related work experience).

Responsibilities

• Performs patient/family genetic risk assessment: collects and evaluates medical and family histories; obtains and reviews medical records to confirm reported diagnosis.
• Analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient, medical records, and resource materials.
• Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporates into clinical practice.
• Provides information regarding etiology, inheritance, incidence/carrier risks, and natural history/prognosis for genetic conditions; facilitates patients understanding of genetic, medical and psychosocial information including risks, testing options and procedures; performs psychosocial assessment during genetic consultation and provides grief and crisis counseling as needed.
• Formulates genetic testing and/or medical recommendations in collaboration with physicians and team members; facilitates referrals for other family members who seek information; provides medical genetic counseling.
• Implements or facilitates the recommendations based upon the patient-family assessment: coordinates request for laboratory services, analyzes and interprets clinical/laboratory findings and conveys results to patients, physicians and team members; distinguishes complex laboratory results requiring action; seeks appropriate supervision for representation/participation in action; provides reassurance and support to the patient.
• Evaluates patient-family care; writes detailed consultation reports conveying complex genetic concepts to patients and referring health care providers; completes chart notes and keeps statistics on outcome; records patient interactions.
• Assists with prior authorization, working with family and payor to ensure appropriate testing is ordered.
• Participates in newborn screening follow-up, including counseling of newly identified families and reporting information back to the department of health for conditions referred to pediatric neurology.

This position identifies, investigates, interprets, and communicates potential risk factors and provides support and counseling to families and patients by referring them to relevant support services under the supervision of a Licensed Genetic Counselor.

A temporary Genetic Counseling License is required for this position and is only good for 18 months, after which time the candidate must have a full Genetic Counseling License.
