Job summary

The Division of Medical Genetics within the Department of Pediatrics at University of Utah Health seeks a full-time Temporary Licensed Genetic Counselor to deliver comprehensive genetic counseling for genetic conditions. The role includes risk assessment, counseling, referrals, and coordination of testing under supervision of a licensed counselor.

A temporary Genetic Counseling License is required for 18 months, after which a full license is needed.

Qualifications

• Current Temporary Genetic Counselor License in the State of Utah.
• Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling from an accredited program or equivalency.

Responsibilities

• Performs patient/family genetic risk assessment: collects and evaluates medical and family histories; obtains and reviews medical records to confirm reported diagnosis.
• Analyzes and interprets information obtained from patient, medical records, and resource materials.
• Evaluates complex medical and genetic literature from varied sources and incorporates into clinical practice.
• Provides information regarding etiology, inheritance, risks and prognosis; facilitates understanding and supports patients and families.
• Formulates genetic testing and/or medical recommendations in collaboration with physicians; coordinates referrals.
• Coordinates laboratory requests, analyzes results, and conveys findings to patients and team members; provides reassurance and support.
• Writes detailed consultation reports; completes notes and tracks outcomes.
• Assists with prior authorization and testing orders; works with payors as needed.
• Participates in newborn screening follow-up and counseling for affected families.

Education

Master’s degree in Genetic Counseling

Equivalency: one year of education can substitute for two years of related work experience
