Job summary

GBMC HealthCare in Baltimore is seeking a Sterile Processing Assistant under direct supervision to learn, handle and store instruments and processed goods for redistribution across the Medical Center.

The role supports Sterile Processing Specialists, requires a high school diploma or GED, completion of the didactic portion of the Sterile Processing Program, provisional CRCST certification, and 400 practicum hours within the first three months of employment.

Qualifications

• Successful completion of didactic portion of Sterile Processing Program.

Responsibilities

• Learn layout and functions of all areas within the sterile processing department (Decontamination, prep and pack, case carts, assembly, sterilization, etc.).
• Understand major processes including decontamination, sterilization, sterile storage, assembly, case cart picking, and testing.
• Instrument handling and inspection; identify missing or malfunctioning parts.
• Assist in collecting and cleaning instruments in decontamination and breakdown of case carts.
• Observe sterilization processes and learn how to complete documentation for processed loads; support updating par levels and inventory systems.

Job description

Under direct supervision of leadership and/or preceptor in the department, cares, handles and stores instruments, supplies and equipment necessary for surgery and processed goods for redistribution throughout the Medical Center. Assists Sterile Processing Specialists with various daily tasks and assignments. While training the individual will learn all the necessary tasks to function independently in the sterile processing department.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to walk and stand for up to eighty percent (80%) of work time.
• Frequent hand washing.

• Ability to push, pull, or lift heavy instruments up to 40 pounds up to eighty (80%) percent of work time.

Working Conditions

• Works in clean and dirty areas. Is moderately exposed to heat.
• Works in areas with considerable noise from sterilizers and other equipment fifty (50%) percent of work time.
• Exposed to water and detergents up to fifty (50%) percent of work time.
• Exposed to potential health hazards and physical hazards from contaminated instruments and other sharp objects up to (50%) of work time.

Conditions of Employment

Successful completion of 400 practicum hours within the first three (3) months of employment.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Under the supervision of experienced central sterile processing specialists and or management team

• Learn the layout and functions of all areas within the sterile processing department. (Decontamination, prep and pack, case carts, assembly, sterilization, etc.)
• Understand the major processes including decontamination, sterilization, sterile storage, assembly, case cart picking, and testing.
• Instrument handling and inspection.
• Identify and inspect surgical instruments to detect missing or malfunctioning parts.
• Assist in collecting and cleaning instruments in decontamination as well as break down of case carts.
• Observes sterilization processes and learns how to complete documentation for processed loads.
• Understand and apply all sterilization methods used in the department.
• Assists specialists with maintaining and updating par levels of all instrument sets, trays, and processed goods
• Learn and become familiar with the sterile processing inventory and tracking system SPM.
• Prepares for certification completion and 400 hours requirement
• Assists in maintaining cleanliness of unit in accordance with Infection Control standards.
• Assists specialists with obtaining and delivering items to the GOR
• Assists specialists with daily assignments.

Pay Range

$17.35 - $26.36

Final salary offer will be based on the candidate's qualifications, education, experience and alignment with our organizational needs.
