Job summary

Stanley Black & Decker, Inc. is seeking a Prototype Technician Apprentice in Valley City, OH to support the prototype manufacturing team on-site. You will assist with developing new and existing outdoor power equipment, operate mills, lathes, and welding tools, and fabricate parts for engineering projects.

The role emphasizes hands-on learning, reading blueprints, and collaborating with technicians. A High School Diploma or equivalent is required, and the company offers growth opportunities

Qualifications

  • Has genuine interest in hands-on mechanical work.
  • Familiar with basic shop equipment (mills, lathes, welding).
  • Willing to learn CNC, sheet metal fabrication and prototype assembly.
  • Reads blueprints or diagrams and asks questions.
  • Communicates clearly and works well in a team.
  • Comfort with basic software such as MS Office.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Able to stand for extended periods in a shop.

The Job:

As an Prototype Technician Apprentice, you’ll be part of our Prototype Manufacturing team working as an on-site employee at our Valley City, Ohio facility. You’ll get to:

  • Assist Prototype Technicians in the prototype development of new and existing outdoor power equipment.
  • Utilize standard machine shop equipment, welding, and sheet metal fabrication equipment to prototype parts.
  • Operate mills, CNC controls, lathes, and metal equipment for engineering groups with prototype design projects.
  • Fabricate sheet metal parts using press brakes to form laser cut blanks.
  • Think creatively to enhance quality improvements, cost reductions, and manufacturing ideas.
  • Use computers and specialized programs for completing projects.
  • Read blueprints and create prototype parts utilizing the correct materials and tools.

  • Is familiar with basic shop equipment (such as mills, lathes, or welding tools) and eager to develop these skills further.
  • Demonstrates a willingness to learn about CNC machines, sheet metal fabrication, and prototype assembly.
  • Can follow instructions, read basic blueprints or diagrams, and ask questions.
  • Communicates clearly and works well with others in a team environment.
  • Is comfortable using computers and basic software (such as Microsoft Office); open to learning new programs.
  • Pays attention to detail and takes pride in doing quality work.
  • Maintains a positive attitude and is open to feedback and coaching.
  • Holds a High School Diploma or equivalent (required); any vocational coursework or hands‑on experience is a plus.
  • Able to stand for extended periods and perform physical tasks in a shop environment.
