Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • Enrollment in or completion of a technical program in Machine Tool Technology, Manufacturing Technology, Mechatronics, or related field preferred.
  • Previous coursework, vocational training, internships, co-op experience, or hands-on machining experience is a plus but not required.
  • Basic mechanical aptitude and interest in machining, manufacturing, and prototype development.
  • Ability to learn machining fundamentals, blueprint reading, measurement techniques, and shop practices.
  • Strong mathematical skills and problem-solving ability.
  • Ability to follow instructions and accept coaching from experienced team members.
  • Demonstrated attention to detail and commitment to quality workmanship.

  • Support the fabrication of prototype parts, fixtures, gauges, tooling, and related components from drawings, sketches, CAD models, and verbal instructions.
  • Perform basic machining tasks including drilling, milling, turning, sawing, tapping, and other operations as assigned.
  • Complete secondary operations such as deburring, sanding, polishing, assembly, and part finishing.
  • Learn to use precision measuring instruments including calipers, micrometers, indicators, height gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Assist with preventive maintenance, cleaning, lubrication, and upkeep of prototype shop equipment.
  • Support Engineering, Quality, and Manufacturing teams on prototype and development projects.

The Prototype Machinist is an entry-level position responsible for learning and developing machining skills while assisting in the fabrication of prototype components, fixtures, gauges, tooling, and other machine parts. Under the guidance of experienced machinists and prototype shop personnel, the machinist will gain hands-on experience operating machine shop equipment, interpreting engineering drawings, performing basic machining operations, and supporting prototype development activities.

  • Ability to lift, carry, and move materials weighing up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to use a personal computer and related software applications.
