Job description

Protection & Control Technician

We are seeking experienced Protective Relay Technicians for an expanding Field Services Group with a focus on projects in Ohio and the Midwest. Candidates must have experience with protective relays, transformers, circuit breakers, power circuit breakers, metal‑clad and enclosed switchers, power cables, substation equipment, motor control centers, medium‑voltage control, excitation equipment, and automatic transfer switches. This is a full‑time position with complete benefits and per diem travel expenses.

Travel Requirement

This field position requires travel within Ohio to substations and customer locations. The company covers travel expenses.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Develop the skills to provide technical capabilities for installing, adjusting, and troubleshooting relays.
  • Develop the ability to test relays: overcurrent/voltage, directional, distance, impedance, sync check, loss of field, reverse power, multifunction relays.
  • Read associated schematics, both internal and external of the relay.
  • Develop the skills to communicate with RTS software.
  • Assist in writing functional test plans.
  • Participate in a training and development program to achieve comprehensive knowledge of electrical fundamentals, transmission and distribution equipment, and routine P&C functions.
  • Remain current on all safety and technical training.
  • Collect field data and perform arc flash studies, coordination studies, and short‑circuit analysis.
  • Provide technical insight regarding substation systems and electrical power systems.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Experience: Minimum 3–5 years related experience in substations, experience in relay testing, and field experience.
  • Education: EET or Technical School credential.
  • Ability to carry out instructions furnished in written or oral form; handle problems involving several concrete variables.
  • Ability to add, subtract, and divide all units of measure.
  • Ability to read company manuals and reports, workplace rules and procedures; speak with poise and confidence using correct English.
  • Licensure and Certifications: SEL or OEM Certified; NETA or NICET encouraged.
  • Test Equipment: Proficiency with commonly used test sets such as M400, Doble 6150, CMC‑256, CMC‑356, etc.
  • U.S. citizenship or U.S. permanent resident status required.
