NES Fircroft is partnering with a growing engineering and field services organization to add experienced Protection & Control Technicians across the U.S.

The role focuses on relay testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and protection system work in transmission and distribution substations, with hands-on field duties.

Travel with per diem is offered, with opportunities for long-term career progression into senior P&C roles on a pipeline of utility projects.

Qualifications

• 3+ years of Protection & Control or substation commissioning experience.
• Hands-on testing and commissioning of protective relays.
• Experience with relay test equipment such as Doble F6150 or Omicron CMC.
• Ability to read one-line diagrams and protection drawings.
• Work in utility transmission or distribution substations.

Responsibilities

• Perform protection testing and commissioning in substations.
• Test protective relays from manufacturers including SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, etc.
• Conduct secondary injection, functional, and end-to-end testing of protection schemes.
• Troubleshoot relay logic and protection circuits.
• Support SCADA, RTU, and substation communications.
• Read diagrams and verify trip/close circuits.

Job description

I'm partnering with a growing engineering and field services organization looking to add experienced Protection & Control Technicians to support utility, renewable energy, industrial, and EPC projects across the U.S.

This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on P&C professional who enjoys relay testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and protection system work across transmission and distribution substations.

Key Responsibilities

• Perform Protection & Control testing, commissioning, troubleshooting, and startup activities within utility and industrial substations.
• Test and commission protective relays from manufacturers including SEL, GE, ABB, Siemens, Beckwith, Basler, and similar platforms.
• Perform secondary injection testing, functional testing, element testing, logic verification, trip checks, and end-to-end testing of protection schemes.
• Test and verify protection functions including overcurrent, differential, distance, bus, transformer, breaker failure, and other transmission/distribution protection schemes.
• Troubleshoot relay logic, control wiring, DC circuits, communications, and protection system issues.
• Read and interpret one-line diagrams, three-line diagrams, AC/DC schematics, wiring diagrams, elementary diagrams, and protection drawings.
• Perform point-to-point checks, control circuit verification, and trip/close circuit testing during commissioning activities.
• Support SCADA, RTU, and substation communications checkout where required.

What We're Looking For

• 3+ years of Protection & Control, relay testing, or substation commissioning experience.
• Hands-on experience testing and commissioning protective relays and protection schemes.
• Experience with relay test equipment such as Doble F6150, Omicron CMC, or similar secondary injection test sets.
• Strong understanding of relay settings, protection logic, control circuits, and electrical protection systems.
• Ability to troubleshoot protective relays, wiring, communications, and control circuits.
• Experience working within utility transmission or distribution substations.
• Strong communication skills and ability to work independently in the field.

Preferred Experience

• Experience with SEL relays and SEL AcSELerator QuickSet.
• Experience performing end-to-end relay testing and protection scheme commissioning.
• Experience with SCADA, RTUs, SEL RTACs, DNP3, or substation communications.
• Experience supporting utility, renewable energy, data center, industrial, or EPC projects.
• Previous experience leading commissioning activities, outages, or junior technicians.y
