Job summary

The U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs is seeking a qualified candidate to support the Prosthetic Treatment Center (PTC) within the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System. This role focuses on prosthetic/orthotic processes and patient services.

You will receive calls and visitors, determine eligibility for medical items or services, and assist with forms to obtain needed items and services. Experience with electronic medical records is preferred.

Qualifications

• One year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-04 level.
• Education may substitute for the required experience as described.
• Combination of experience and education can qualify at GS-5 level.

Job description

This position is part of the Prosthetic Treatment Center (PTC) within the Prosthetics & Sensory Aids Service, located within the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System (CTVHCS). This healthcare system has an active outpatient treatment program and includes, but not limited to, Audiology & Speech Pathology, Visual Impairment Service Team, Spinal Cord Injury, Rehabilitation Medicine, Blind Rehabilitation Service, Medical Services, Surgical Services, Ophthalmology, and Orthopedic Services. To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 09/28/2026.

You may qualify based on your experience and/or education as described below:

• Specialized Experience: You must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-04 in the normal line of progression for the occupation in the organization. Examples of specialized experience would typically include, but are not limited to: Thorough knowledge of Prosthetic/orthotic processes, rules and regulations on eligibility and entitlements; Receive and direct calls and visitors; Determine visitor's eligibility and entitlement for the medical items and or services; Assist visitors with the completion of forms or documents necessary to obtain medical items and or services; Utilizing complex technical computer systems of records to obtain patient medical information, appointment scheduling, determine medical benefits, etc. OR,
• Education: Applicants may substitute education for the required experience. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have four full academic years of successfully completed education above the high school level. OR,
• Combination: Applicants may also combine education and experience to qualify at this level. You must have an combination of specialized experience and education. For GS-5 level positions only education in excess of the first 60 semester hours (i.e., beyond the second year) is creditable toward meeting the specialized experience requirement. One full academic year of study (30 semester hours) beyond the second year is equivalent to 6 months of specialized experience.
