General Information

The Promotores de Salud (PDS) Coordinator will play a key role in educating and empowering local communities about safe fish consumption practices. They will serve as a liaison between public health organizations, local communities, and individuals, particularly targeting populations that rely on fish as a dietary staple. The role involves providing culturally sensitive education on safe fish consumption, contaminant risks, and overall health, in alignment with environmental health and food safety guidelines.

Duties and Responsibilities
  • Community Outreach: Conduct outreach with Latinx fishing communities along the South and South Fork Shenandoah Rivers and educate about the Fish Consumption Advisory (FCA).
  • Health Education: Deliver culturally relevant education about the health benefits of fish, safe consumption practices, and potential risks of contaminated fish, using clear language and accessible materials.
  • Relationship Building: Develop trust and maintain strong relationships with local communities, including attending community events, facilitating group discussions, and serving as a trusted source of information.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with South River Watershed Coalition and DuPont Specialities to ensure the accuracy of information and to support ongoing public health initiatives.
  • Advocacy: Advocate for healthier environmental practices and support efforts to reduce pollution in local waterways through community involvement and education.
  • Data Collection and Reporting: Assist in collecting data and preparing reports and presentations to provide information to community members, organizations and other agencies. Maintain and track data in relation to outreach events.
Qualifications
  • Bilingual skills in English and Spanish required.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Completion of a Community Health Worker Training Program or willingness to complete is highly desirable.
  • Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work with diverse communities with professionalism and cultural sensitivity.
  • Demonstrated interest in improving community health and well-being through outreach and education.
  • Ability to work effectively and efficiently without close supervision.
  • Willingness to work in a variety of settings, including outdoors and within the local community.
  • Weekends and occasional evening work is required.
Conditions of Employment

Employment is contingent upon the successful completion of a criminal background check.

This is a part-time wage position working up to an average of 29 hours per week over the course of a calendar year with no benefits.
