Job description

Reports to: Theater & Operations Manager

Status: Part-Time, Hourly (Non-Exempt)

Position Summary

The Projectionist is responsible for the picture and sound quality of every screening across our three auditoriums. Working closely with the Theater & Operations Manager, this role builds the weekly show schedule, manages the technical execution of special events, and handles the daily operation of the booth — from DCP ingest through final quality checks. This is a hands‑on role for someone who takes genuine pride in flawless presentation.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and manage the weekly show schedule across all three auditoriums, building and scheduling playlists in coordination with the Theater & Operations Manager
  • Load and ingest DCPs, manage KDMs and validity windows, and prepare all content in advance of screenings
  • Operate the theater's digital projection and sound systems for daily programming
  • Manage the technical execution of special events, including repertory titles, private screenings, alternative content, and community programming
  • Perform pre-show and in-show quality checks on picture, sound, masking, and lighting to ensure every presentation meets the theater's standards
  • Perform routine maintenance and upkeep of projection and sound equipment, including lamp/light engine monitoring, filter cleaning, and booth organization
  • Diagnose and resolve technical issues promptly, coordinating with the theater's audiovisual partner on matters requiring specialized service
  • Maintain accurate records of content, KDMs, equipment condition, and technical issues
  • Provide booth-operation training to the Theater & Operations Manager and shift leads to ensure coverage continuity
Requirements
  • Full working knowledge of modern digital cinema projection systems — projectors (e.g., Barco, Christie, NEC), cinema servers, TMS platforms, DCP formats, and KDM management — is required
  • Working knowledge of cinema audio systems and signal flow
  • Strong troubleshooting instincts and the ability to resolve issues under show‑time pressure
  • Meticulous attention to detail — you notice soft focus, misaligned masking, and a channel out before anyone else does
  • Reliability and punctuality; shows cannot start without you
  • Evening, weekend, and holiday availability required
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs and work on ladders/lifts as needed, with or without reasonable accommodation
Schedule

This is a part‑time position with shifts concentrated on evenings, weekends, and holidays, based on the theater's programming schedule. Hours will vary week to week with programming and special events.

Perks: Free movies, concession discounts, and a place on the founding team of a landmark venue. All employees accrue New York State paid sick leave; eligible employees are also covered by New York State Paid Family Leave and paid prenatal leave.

Any offer of employment is contingent on a post‑offer background check. Criminal history is reviewed on an individual basis in accordance with New York Correction Law Article 23-A, and a criminal record does not automatically disqualify a candidate.
