Position Overview

The Project Superintendent is responsible for overseeing and directing all field operations for heavy civil construction projects. This position ensures projects are completed safely, efficiently, on schedule, within budget, and in accordance with project specifications and company standards. The Superintendent serves as the primary field leader, coordinating crews, subcontractors, equipment, materials, and project resources while maintaining strong relationships with customers, owners, engineers, and project stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities (Essential Duties And Functions)
Field Operations Management
  • Lead daily field operations on heavy civil construction projects.
  • Coordinate and supervise Foremen, operators, laborers, truck drivers, and subcontractors.
  • Plan and schedule labor, equipment, and material resources to maximize productivity.
  • Monitor project progress and adjust work plans to meet production goals.
  • Ensure all work is performed according to plans, specifications, and contract requirements.
  • Conduct regular site inspections to verify quality, safety, and schedule compliance.
Project Execution
  • Collaborate with Project Managers and Estimators to support project planning and execution.
  • Participate in project startup meetings and development of work plans.
  • Track production, quantities, equipment utilization, and workforce performance.
  • Assist with project scheduling and milestone tracking.
  • Identify and resolve field issues that impact productivity, cost, quality, or schedule.
  • Support change order documentation and project reporting efforts.
Safety Leadership
  • Promote and maintain a strong safety culture across all job sites.
  • Ensure compliance with company policies, OSHA regulations, and applicable safety requirements.
  • Conduct safety meetings, audits, and job hazard analyses.
  • Investigate incidents and implement corrective actions as needed.
  • Lead by example in demonstrating safe work practices.
Customer & Stakeholder Relations
  • Develop and maintain positive relationships with owners, engineers, inspectors, agencies, and customers.
  • Participate in progress meetings and communicate project updates.
  • Address field concerns promptly and professionally.
  • Represent Idaho Materials & Construction with professionalism and integrity.
Qualifications

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.

Education
  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, or a related field preferred.
  • Equivalent combinations of education and heavy civil construction experience will be considered.
Experience
  • Minimum of 5 years of heavy civil construction experience required.
  • Minimum of 3 years in a supervisory or superintendent role preferred.
  • Experience with earthwork, grading, utilities, excavation, asphalt paving, site development, roadway construction, or infrastructure projects required.
  • Proven experience managing crews, subcontractors, schedules, and budgets.
  • Will be subject to drug testing, medical exams and physical agility testing.
Knowledge/Skill Requirements
  • Ability to influence people to work enthusiastically towards goals and performance targets by effectively providing necessary coaching, mentoring, and feedback.
  • Ability to lead and manage change through continuous performance improvement in employee development, quality, safety, and production.
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write correspondence. Ability to effectively present information in one on one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiple and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ration, percent, land to draw and interpret bar graphs.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be able to type and use keyboards accurately and have knowledge of Database software.
Certificates, Licenses, Registrations
  • A Standard Driver’s License is required. A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) is preferred.
  • Traffic control certificate is preferred.

Physical Requirements

The employee is frequently required to sit, climb, and use hands to signal and handle equipment. The employee is occasionally required to stand, walk, crawl, kneel, bend, and reach with hands and arms above their shoulders. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move anywhere up to 50-75 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
