Job summary

Datum Engineers in Chicago is seeking a Project Structural Engineer to join the team. You will work on analysis and design of vertical structures, coordinate with architects and other disciplines, and participate in project management and mentoring.

The role emphasizes collaboration, design excellence, and opportunities across firm offices. You will contribute to innovative solutions and engage in advancing structural engineering practice.

Qualifications

• 2-7 years of experience in the design of vertical structures.
• Master’s Degree in Structural Engineering, required.
• SE or PE license, or on track to become licensed.
• Strong technical experience in the design of steel, concrete, wood, masonry.
• Experience using design and analysis software such as ETABS, RISA; Revit experience a plus.
• Strong interpersonal, communication, and teamwork skills.
• An appreciation for architecture/design.
• A desire to grow, collaborate, share ideas.

Responsibilities

• Analysis and design of structural systems, members, details.
• Create mark-ups and direct documentation/drawings of structural systems, members, details.
• Code analysis and research; preparing calculations.
• Collaboration and coordination with both internal team members and external team members (architects, other disciplines, clients, contractors, etc.).
• Work with others in own office and across firm, both in-person and remote; opportunity to direct others’ work and mentor.
• Opportunity to perform project management.
• Participate in firmwide efforts such as Research & Development, and Engineering Standards.
• Opportunity to participate in some business development efforts and networking events.
• Opportunity to participate in external professional development events.

Datum is looking to grow our Chicago office.We have 88 years of history as a firm, with 80+ structural engineers across 5 offices.Datum focuses on structural engineering for buildings, and practices what we call The Art of Structural Engineering – structural engineers with a passion for architecture, collaboration, design, efficiency, and constructability.We look at every project as a new design challenge – while we lean on our considerable expertise and experience, it is important to view every new effort as an opportunity for innovation.

We give our structural engineers a lot of responsibility in projects – design, analysis, coordination, client-facing, site visits, etc.We believe the best engineers are those that get exposed to every part of the project.We also have a vast network of in-house expertise to draw from – we may sit in 5 offices but we practice as one firm.In the Chicago office you will be working not only with your Chicago teammates, but you will also have opportunities to work with other offices.
