Job Description

Join SVCC as a Project Peer Tutor for the Student Support Services (SSS) Program. In this rewarding part‑time role, you will provide individualized and group tutoring to help students build academic confidence, strengthen foundational skills, and achieve their educational goals.

Working closely with the Project Director and Advisors, you will support the success of first‑generation, low‑income, and students with disabilities through personalized instruction, encouragement, and connection to learning resources.

The Project Peer Tutor for the Student Support Services (SSS) Program provides targeted academic assistance in core subject areas such as math, science, English, and related disciplines. This position plays a critical role in helping students improve academic performance, master course content, and develop effective learning strategies to enhance persistence and retention.

Working under the supervision of the Project Director, Student Support Services, the tutor will deliver high‑quality academic support both in‑person and virtually, ensuring compliance with federal TRIO requirements and SVCC’s mission of equitable student success.

This is a restricted, part‑time wage position located in either Keysville, VA, or Alberta, VA (home campus), with consideration of the chosen candidate's preference, and funded through the U.S. Department of Education’s TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. Continued employment is contingent upon the availability of federal funds. The current TRIO SSS grant is a five‑year award period running from September 25, 2025, through September 24, 2030; however, this is not a guaranteed time frame.

This position averages 10 hours per week, and Health benefits and paid leave are NOT available.

Some of the duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide individualized and small‑group tutoring in academic subjects relevant to students’ coursework and program objectives
  • Use active learning, modeling, and other evidence‑based instructional techniques to help students understand and apply course concepts
  • Adapt tutoring methods to meet diverse learning styles and needs
  • Assist students in developing study skills, time management strategies, and self‑regulated learning habits that promote academic independence
  • Maintain accurate and confidential records of tutoring sessions, student progress, and attendance in accordance with program procedures
  • Communicate regularly with Project Advisors and the Project Director regarding student progress, learning barriers, and academic concerns
  • Utilize educational technology platforms and tools to support face‑to‑face and virtual tutoring sessions
  • Participate in program meetings, trainings, and professional development related to effective tutoring and student support
  • Contribute to the overall goals of the TRIO SSS Program by fostering an inclusive and supportive learning environment that promotes academic success and persistence
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in Education, Math, Science, English, or a closely related field from an accredited college or university; or a combination of equivalent education and experience
  • Demonstrated proficiency in subject matter relevant to assigned tutoring area(s)
  • Demonstrated experience providing academic tutoring or instructional support in an educational setting
  • Minimum GPA of 3.0 in content‑related coursework and tutoring area(s)
  • Ability to deliver tutoring in a student‑centered, inclusive, and accessible manner
  • Experience working with students from diverse socioeconomic, cultural, and educational backgrounds
  • Familiarity with learning strategies that support students with disabilities and underrepresented populations
  • Proficiency in using educational technology tools (e.g., Zoom, Google Suite, learning management systems) to enhance learning
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills
  • Ability to maintain accurate documentation and uphold confidentiality standards
  • Commitment to fostering a supportive learning environment consistent with the mission of TRIO SSS and SVCC
