Job Summary
To analyze machine operations and to recommend and/or modify so as to achieve optimum machine efficiency, productivity, and safety.
Essential Functions
- Works independently or with the plant engineer on special machine projects or breakdowns and repairs that require detailed analysis and resolution.
- Recommends machine modifications.
- Implements modifications from written or verbal instructions, blueprints or self‑made sketches and engineered drawings.
- Designs and/or constructs new machines, machine parts or tools where necessary or deemed practical. Performs precision welding as required.
- Performs lathe, shaper, milling machine and surface grinder work.
- Aids in the general work of the Maintenance Department as required.
- Assists in the installation of new equipment or the relocation of existing equipment as required.
- Complies with all safety policies (e.g. guard use, hearing protection, etc.), reporting any violation to immediate supervisor.
- Prepares daily record of work performed.
- Monitors inventory level of routinely used production materials and supplies, informing appropriate personnel of inventory needs.
Qualifications
- Knowledge would normally be acquired through a high school degree or equivalent program and satisfactory completion of Job #275, Master Maintenance Technician.
- Demonstrated innate abilities to be resourceful in solving complex machine problems, perform training activities, proven ability to design and construct complex advanced systems, proven ability to accept responsibility with minimum supervision.
- Knowledge of all materials used as to strength, durability, etc.
- Working knowledge of electrical wiring related to switches and motors.
- Working knowledge of production equipment operation in order to perform complex machine diagnostics in carrying out the essential functions for optimum efficiency, productivity and safety.
- Ability to read and apply contents of work orders, operating manuals, and other related information in order to analyze mechanical operations to recommend and/or modify for optimum efficiency, productivity and safety.
- Ability to read and interpret blueprints and machine drawings of machines, machine parts and tools.
- Ability to write to record work performed daily.
- Certification in AutoCAD required in order to create accurate, engineered drawings of machines, machine parts and tools.
- Ability to perform mathematics used to make modifications on machinery to optimize efficiency, productivity, and safety.
- Ability to solve complex problems to accomplish optimum efficiency, productivity, and safety where many alternative solutions are available.
- Ability to communicate to discuss mechanical problems and technical matters with plant engineer, supervisors, machine operators, management, outside machine vendors, etc.
- Ability to use small machine tools, hand tools, welding equipment, lathe, shaper, milling machine, surface grinder.
