Project Manager - Ubuntu Embedded Systems

Role Overview

We are hiring a Project Manager - Ubuntu Embedded Systems for Canonical's Devices business. This role involves coordinating and completing large, complex customer-facing projects, overseeing all aspects of delivery, and acting as the primary liaison between engineering teams and customers. Projects include delivering Ubuntu images for devices such as robots, edge gateways, IoT devices, PCs, and automotive systems. The position requires building and maintaining relationships with team members, customers, partners/vendors (Silicon vendors, OEMs, ODMs, IHVs), and internal departments.

Location

This role is remote and based in the AMERICAs region.

Responsibilities

1. Managing projects through their lifecycle to meet goals for Canonical and clients.
2. Delivering engineering professional services.
3. Collaborating with engineering teams on custom board enablement and Ubuntu image delivery.
4. Developing project statements of work.
5. Creating and maintaining project schedules and plans.
6. Securing client agreement on schedules and work items.
7. Ensuring projects are completed within scope, time, and resources.
8. Managing risk mitigation plans.
9. Addressing technical issues to ensure delivery outcomes.
10. Maintaining communication with clients and stakeholders.
11. Managing third-party deliverables.
12. Keeping management informed on project status.
13. Identifying and managing engineering requests outside existing contracts.
14. Promoting Canonical technologies to customers.
15. Supporting work across different time zones and non-traditional hours as needed.

Qualifications

• Proven project management experience in engineering services, software development teams, and field engineers.
• Experience managing cross-cultural, multi-continent project resources, especially in Asia, Europe, and the Americas.
• Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, or Math preferred.
• Knowledge of Linux, open source community, and computer architecture.
• Excellent verbal and written English communication skills.
• Strong leadership and problem-solving skills, with experience in building partnerships and managing complex organizational relationships.
• PMP/PMI or PRINCE2 certification preferred.
• Willingness to work non-standard hours and travel up to four times annually.
